![Looking at how far she has come, Dr Cucunubá also reflects on some deep structural gender gaps in Latin American academic life and how they can shape young researchers' career decisions. “In my early years of career, it was difficult to see women in leadership positions, so it was very much [after] going abroad when I realised women were also having professorships and being leaders of big projects. I wasn't observing that in my context in Latin America when I was starting medicine and public health”, she reflects. Things are slowly changing globally and in Latin America, but Dr Cucunubá sobering reflects on the recent advances made by women in science and medicine: “I feel very grateful to other women before me [who] struggled, but they fight it a lot, to get this. […] I am seeing some colleagues getting into leadership positions, but it's not something that we can [take] for granted.
