I kinda love how people are up in arms about this because it's Trump, and only because it's Trump. This happens all the time! "blind people don't shop here, no need to be accessible" "wheelchairs don't go here, no need for a ramp". Tale as old as time #accessibility #a11y

Seeing so many of y'all talk about "blind people" in regards to people who are unwilling to "see" evil/a particular political ideology/the faults of a particular person ... you know that has very little to do with blindness, right? Like, you ARE aware you don't see with your ears? Just checking...

Tricky bit is: they actually _are_ pretty great for _some_ blind people. They actually _do_ unfuck a lot of the situations we as a society fucked up FOR blind people. SO, yes, slimy marketing, but also, uhm?

I got suggested by @sophiemac.bsky.social to write an alt text guide from the perspective of an actual blind screen reader user. Here's me doing that, a thread. Supershort summary: alt text is what you tell your friend you're on the phone with something looks like to include them or get their take

Lol a blind simulator would just be turning the screen/visuals off altogether

This is one of those double things for me. Great that this exists for people who need the confidence boost and the time and guidance to explore this, but also, I hope people casually finding this do realize plenty of blind/VI folks travel by tram often enough already :)

Using a screen reader? Alt text helps. Picture doesn’t load? Alt text helps. You an artist? Alt text helps. Don’t know who’s in that photo or the context of that meme? CHECK THE ALT TEXT.

I am generally not a huge proponent of #blind specific documentation as, if you make tech right it shouldn't be needed, but when a serious need arises I am happy to step in. Wrote this for #freeCodeCamp to start #screenreader users off using Discord @freecodecamp.bsky.social

I have been asked on here how I even computer. This is how I even computer. This is also why alt text is important, why #accessibility matters, and why you're kinda sorta discriminating if you decide you don't care www.youtube.com/shorts/UWNT4WTlvoI #youtube #shorts #screenReader #blind

"could be" is being nice here. With the #accessibility track record as of late, "is probably" would be a more truthful statement and we can, and should, be doing so much better

hey there @yeahmaybe.bsky.social :) Saw your game just now but noticed it unfortunately doesn't work with screen readers :( Godot includes support for making your widgets just work®(tm) in some of the latest versions of Godot, any chance you might be able to look into this?

I find the results to just doing a search on "blind people" on this platform an interesting activity. It's a beautiful mix of pro/con meta glasses, political punditry, people's moms-sisters-cousin-backed accounts of what blind people are like and discussions about the word "reading".

Kinda love how the Meta glasses get so much flack for being "pervert glasses". ...No ... the people are the perverts, the glasses just enable them. But then, that is literally the guns rhetoric and that is icky. The whole guns don't kill people, people kill people thing.

What they say: "Accessibility and SEO/AI support/better discovery go hand in hand!" What we hear: "We know accessibility is a drag so here, have a carrot so you actually get better YOURSELF by trying to include more people because FUCK THAT< amirite?!"

Accessibility improvements have the greatest impact when they happen upstream. In an interview with TDT, Mike Gifford discusses inclusive design, upstream contributions, and why accessibility should be part of everyday engineering—not an afterthought. bit.ly/4vXkcVW #Accessibility #A11y

Yup. We only see the importance when it becomes personal. COVID was shit, but what WAS great was the fact people all of a sudden could make things a lot more accessible because they couldn't do what they wanted otherwise. Covid's gone, so the inconvenience is gone for most. Not for us.

Very true. Other great candidates for that problem are "Read more", "learn more", "buy now", "this link" and "Open". Sorry, marketing folks, I know verb-noun CTAs are supposed to drive conversion but they really don't work out of context

Meta Threads's audio captcha takes you away from the captcha you're solving which means the code is no longer valid when you try to enter it. But sure, tell me more about how they give the blind sight with their glasses. Screw off ... #actuallyBlind#accessibility

I see a lot of people say Meta glasses supposedly "give the blind their vision back". Let me just put that claim to bed once and for all www.reddit.com/r/Blind/comments/1u8… This is a lot more clear of a reflection of what they're ACTUALLY like #actuallyBlind

I'll translate this into real people speech: We set up two in-person events during a time where going to the US is iffy, got people to write stuff for us and released a bunch of updates that users have found breakage in. Some things like the FOSS guidance is absolutely good, but let's keep it real.

It's GAAD (Global Accessibility Awareness Day). Three things you can ship today: 1. Visible focus styles on every interactive element 2. Real alt text on your top three pages 3. A free scan to see what else is hiding GAAD is one day. What you ship today helps users every day after. a20y.com #a11y

It's kind of amusing to me that people debate the allowance for blind people to wear #meta glasses on here. Blind people taking random pictures and having them analyzed isn't new, that's been a thing since 2015 :) Also, I wouldn't say these glasses are all that good at it

lol I have a search open for "blind people" and I see so many interesting things zip by. A person upset someone was adding alt text to their posts because #fuckBlindPeople. It was even a hashtag. Like ... for one, buy me dinner first, and also, what'd we do to make us so fuckable? :P
