Another few sketches for #Smaugust as I continue to stretch the meaning of what a dragon is

Howard Stanley Crewe (1871–1919) was one of the first spirit photographers. These Spiritualists claimed to capture images of the deceased using tricks like double exposure. Though Crewe's images show the same signs of manipulation, his last portraits show something that still puzzles researchers (🧵)

What happening above that volcano? Something very unusual -- a volcanic light pillar. More typically, light pillars are caused by sunlight and so appear as a bright column that extends upward above a rising or setting Sun. Alternatively, other light pillars -- some quite colorful -- have been recorded above street and house lights. This light pillar, though, was illuminated by the red light emitted by the glowing magma of an erupting volcano. The volcano is Italy's Mount Etna, and the featured image was captured with a single shot a few hours after sunset in mid-June. Freezing temperatures above the volcano's ash cloud created ice-crystals either in cirrus clouds high above the volcano -- or in condensed water vapor expelled by Mount Etna. The darkness of the night accompanies Léon Spilliaert on his solitary wanderings in Ostend or when—tormented by stomach pain—he roams the silent rooms of his own home. The darkness causes the forms to blur. Spilliaert paints and draws the night, the streetlights, and the moonlight onto the objects using a very personal technique, combining various materials: colored pencil, pastel, watercolor, gouache, and washed Indian ink. They create endless gradations between light and darkness. The compelling search for his identity prompts him to create a series of expressive self-portraits in a very oppressive atmosphere. In *Self-Portrait with Mirror*, Spilliaert seems to slip away into the darkness, and we see only a shadow of the artist seized by fear. We see Spilliaert with large hollow eyes and an open mouth that seems to be gasping for breath. In the pale green darkness, the face has become a mask. In the large gilded mirror behind the artist, we see a timepiece under a glass dome. Time ticks away, death draws menacingly close, and the artist seeks our attention with his startled gaze, looking for something to hold onto in the spinning room that is otherwise so familiar to him.

A tiny isometric pixel art town on a floating platform. There are different lengths and widths of blue, pink, and purple houses, though most are square with triangular roofs. The town has roads and sidewalks, a park with a tree, and a duck pond.
