“Welcome, please sit down. I’m Dr. MacTavish, and you must be Simon Riley. So, Mr. Riley… what brings you in today? Other than the court order, I know that much.”
Mr. Riley was my father’s name, it was tempting to say, but Simon knew better than to take the bait. Instead, he huffed loudly as he sat down on the couch across from his new shrink. How long would it be before this one gave up on him, too? Or prescribed him pills that made his brain feel like it might melt into toxic sludge and leak out of his ears? Or maybe this one might try to have him committed again? The last time he’d been subjected to involuntary hospitalization, he made sure they knew that keeping him outside those walls was far safer than trying to contain him.
The military kept a far better grip on him. He was a weapon. He was meant to be used, aimed, fired, disassembled, cleaned, put back together, then holstered until necessity demanded blood again. What good would it do to keep him pent up in a metal cage full of screaming nutjobs; sedated, muzzled, declawed, half a man? Riley knew he was most lethal when he was left to his own feral devices, and so did his handlers. He could never be tamed. He’d never let it happen. Which was why any attempts at “therapy”—involuntary or not—made him laugh. It was all a game. How long would this little song and dance go on?
