I’m so disappointed with the Greens today, and what’s more I’m confused how pandering to tankies wins them votes that weren’t already sitting with them. I’m pretty sure it’s a net negative policy in terms of shifting voters for them, in fact.

David Shoebridge won the Greens leadership vote on first preferences, but the party announced the two-candidate-preferred result anyway. Gotta love the commitment to ranked choice voting

Just saying it’s very very funny seeing a NSW Greens leader of the federal party, when the branch still refuses to have a state parliamentary leader

Part of the joys of auntiedom is getting to go buy the very cutest and coolest clothes for your niblings, even if it might be impractical or overly exxy. In other news I spent way too much at Gorman Baby today.

Extremely lukewarm take, but I’ve been rewatching old episodes of the Cook and the Chef as background viewing while finishing some knitting, and the class politics of Simon Bryant as a working class trained chef vs Maggie Beer as a very upper middle class primary producer ‘cook’ is fascinating.

Knitting a baby hat for my best friend for her second kid, and I was seriously questioning myself on the size, after I’d had to do an emergency evening knit after the first kid arrived TINY and was too small for any of the hospital hats. Kid’s measuring large on the latest scan. Standard it is.

50/50 on late night buses whether the driver waits for you to sit down or takes off as soon as you’ve tapped on. Truly a classic experience of firmly grabbing poles as you rush down the bus to a seat just in case.

Good to see. If ever there was a feral animal that’s achievable to completely remove from the wild, it’s brumbies, and it’s a pity the program cannot go for full elimination, but the current cull methods are so far superior and effective at management than anything else proposed.

Stymied in my Top 100 books by multiple I wanted to include not being available (there was a vote for A Cage of Butterflies I wish I could have made, but I know that it’s never worth adding ones not already entered), so I went with a variety. Mostly popular picks, but I tried to spread genre.

I think the thing I'm most looking forward to seeing at the 2027 NSW state election is ON coming up against OPV and its strongest soldiers, the "vote 1 Green 2 ALP" stalwarts whose commitment to exactly that vote in all circumstances reliably delivers ALP from-behind wins every election.

Tried to explain this, one of the greatest moments on the internet, to my kids and it was surprisingly difficult. We are losing the ancient texts.
A screenshot of a Twitter exchange from September 2017, during the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey on same-sex marriage.&10;&10;At the top is a tweet from verified user “dan” (@dannolan), posted three hours earlier. His profile photo shows a man with short dark hair and a moustache. The tweet reads: “I work at the australia post in chatswood and I’m using a torch to check all ballots and throw out ALL no votes”.&10;&10;Below the text is a photograph of what appears to be an unopened Australian Bureau of Statistics postal survey envelope. A bright torch is being shone through the envelope, making the paper partly translucent. Through it, the word “No” and a marked box appear visible. Parts of the envelope read “Australian Bureau of Statistics”, “Reply Paid 91204” and “Don’t delay”. The tweet shows 109 replies, 251 retweets and 722 likes.&10;&10;Beneath it is a reply from the verified Australia Post account (@auspost), with the red-and-white Australia Post logo as its profile image. The reply reads: “does not work for Australia Post. Please remember tampering with mail is a federal offence.” It is timestamped 9/13/17, 4:26 PM.&10;&10;The exchange occurred during the 2017 Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey, in which eligible Australians were mailed survey forms asking whether the law should be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry. The joke in the original tweet is therefore about an Australia Post employee supposedly using a torch to identify “No” responses through their envelopes and discard them before they could be counted. Australia Post’s reply treats the claim seriously, publicly denying that the poster was an employee and warning that interfering with mail is a federal offence.

It always amuses me when I point out to some American ranting about infringements of freedom of speech that I don’t believe in absolute freedom of speech and DO strongly believe in limits, actually. Blows their minds every time. Completely unaware not everyone defines things the way they do.

Look maybe Labor really are the communists (or at least socialists) they’re being accused of. The AWU spoke at the presser before Tomago’s CEO. Speakers go: - Federal MP for Paterson - State MP for Port Stephens - PM - Premier - AWU Senior Delegate - CEO Tomago

The spirit of NSW ICAC and its interrelation with the psyche of NSW politics is best understood by the fact that Nick Greiner, the Premier who created it, was the first sitting Premier to be ICACed. The machinery needs the grease of corruption AND the flush valve.

I’m not saying that people with SMSFs are self-selected into being some of the worst loophole exploiting overconfident tax minimisers, but I will say actual studies of the cohort show they’re overconfident in attempting tax minimisation in the most aggressively blatant ways. Great loophole to close.
