Zachary Agush @zagush.bsky.social · 23/07/2026The cost of switching between larger buses in the peak and small ones in the off-peak is the deadhead time from their trip's terminus to the garage, swap out, and drive back and that could happen multiple times a day. Extra deadtime does cost transit agencies money. 120
Zachary Agush @zagush.bsky.social · 23/07/2026The hourly operating cost for a 29', 35', or 40' bus is the same; the only difference is its length. I still need to pay for the driver and the fuel, and the amounts are already set. Maintenance is largely stable since parts are interchangeable and you're paying the same mechanic rate. 120
Zachary Agush @zagush.bsky.social · 23/07/2026Amtrak does add some more capacity at particular points in the year but the majority of train lengths are based on dynamic pricing or the actual availability of coaches; they are still operating a 50+ year fleet. There will be some more space on the Airo fleet but those consists are largely final. 020
Zachary Agush @zagush.bsky.social · 23/07/2026Commuter rail train lengths are relatively consistent regardless of the time of day or whether it is a weekday or weekend. You can be riding an 8-car train in Weekday AM peak or at 11:30 PM. MBTA very rarely changes the length of any trainset since whatever is staged in PVD needs to cover all hours. 110
