New paper out: www.cell.com/iscience/ful... Congratulations to our former PhD student @maxcapelle.bsky.social whose work reveals that the switch in light preference across zebrafish development is driven by a reweighting of three parallel visual processing pathways. Check out a short summary below!

1/11 Excited to share my postdoc work from @schierlab.bsky.social and Rainer Friedrich! 🐟👃 How does the brain decide whether an odor is good or bad? In larval zebrafish, we find that odor preference is reflected in spatially cohesive neuronal domains of the olfactory bulb. 🧵

A thalamus–brainstem attractor network drives history-biased decisions - Nature
Whole-brain, cellular-resolution imaging reveals a hierarchical thalamus–brainstem attractor network that encodes recent history and shapes behavioural bias in zebrafish.

Excellent review. Well, in fairness the sense of gravity was omitted because it has shown very little innovation ;)

“Using an optical backfilling method relying on photoactivable GFP, we generate a whole-brain map of all neurons sending axons towards the spinal cord. This approach reveals far more SPNs than previously described through conventional strategies.” Bonkers work from @wyartlab.bsky.social 🐟🧠

Chapter 1 – Why do we feel dizzy when turning? This comes from how the inner ear’s rotation sensors (the semi-circular canals) work mechanically. The short videos below (and the next one) explain why. (And yes, that video is low-quality, but it's actually me on the chair 😅)
