Anyway, be nicer to chick flicks, even the mediocre ones (even the barelyy passable ones like Lesbian Space Princess). Girl stuff, especially if it is queer, does not require perfection to exist, and you could stand to be more normal about it instead of breaking out the microscope and tweezers.

I had a really good time on call with a friend a few weeks back yakking about us both having watched different series of the Mako Mermaids franchise, because they were kinda mediocre tweenage girl fodder, but they had cool practical effects. Also? mermaids! Girly stuff, even "cringe" can be fun.

A behind the scenes shot of Mako Mermaids with one of the actors in the prostethetic tail the cast would wear while swimming. He's sitting on the edge of a pool set styled to look like an old cave grotto. Crew stand around on land while another crew member under the water reaches up with a hand to support the actor as he leans on the pool edge in the prosthetic tail. A note about the tail is how it's noticeably longer than most mermaiding tail prosthetics, which allowed for really incredible looking motion in underwater swimming shots.

There's one particular reviewer who triggered this rant who I won't name because he was excited for Forgotten Island, so I'm not mad at him specifically, but his videos that tend to go viral enough to reach my feed are usually shitting on a movie that's got a "for girls about girls" vibe...

If you can think Dandadan is fucking awesome but you see Forgotten Island (which I just watched, amazing, big recommend) and think "ew", the difference is that you expect the male gaze to be default and your gut fuzzies pull a birdsrightsactivist when you notice it isn't.

I'm not saying "Dandadan bad", to be clear, I watched it, I *liked* it, but I can do basic feminist analysis, and the show has a habit of fetishizing its female protags and pitting them against each other for the romantic love of a man while ignoring the supportive female relationships of the girls.

Also, if you ever wonder why straight men like anime with emotionally assertive, magic-weilding teen girls so much despite hating on these movies, it's because Dandadan lets you ogle Momo and Aira's bodies while they fight over Okarun. A lot of male animation reviewers would have more peace of mind if they just realized "oh, this isn't bad, it's just not for me" but that doesn't get outrage clicks in a culture that still hates stuff for teenage girls but has just gotten smart about not saying it outright anymore.

Again, a few years ago, they changed their style a bit with a little film called Wish, and look how well that turned out. Good thing they have a film coming in 2 years from now that will uptick their CG style called Clay, which will aim for a stop-motion look.

With the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters officially confirmed to be getting a worldwide theatrical release, I'm confident that along with being guaranteed to be the highest grossing animated film released that year, it'll also make close to $2 billion at the box office like Inside Out 2 and Zootopia 2.

Its understandable that people are pretty weary going into Hexed (even I'm not that excited for the movie) but what annoys me is people talking as if Disney animation hasn't made a bad movie before 2018 and will never make a good movie/have a winning streak again.
