Richard Dadd was a deeply troubled artist, possibly suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. After murdering his father, he was taken into psychiatric care. Here, he created his most famous artwork over the course of 9 years. Fairy Feller’s Master-Stroke (1855-1864)

Overly detailed oil painting depicting a fantasy scene with fairies, elves and other miniature human-like characters. The painting has a very confusing layout, with layers of plant-like mounds that the characters stand on. The perspective is very flat and 2-dimensional and the scene is obscured by randomly placed grasses and reeds. White flowers and acorns are scattered around in a strange and unnatural manner. The many characters depicted are seen conversing with each other, with one wielding a hammer. In the top corner there’s a strange insect-like trumpet machine that is being played by one of the characters. The entire painting is so overly detailed, its difficult to make out anything.

At the centre of the painting a small elf character is seen squatting down in confusion and distress. Above him are more characters with distorted faces going about their lives while ignoring him.
