Psych Science (the journal) is broader than you might think! Do you do descriptive research? Or research w/ underrepresented populations or cultural frameworks? Or research on AI/LLMs for psych? Or research testing lab findings in the real world? We have a special issue for that!

It's hard to definitively prove fraud, but this is a shockingly clear case. I cannot fathom a plausible alternative explanation. Dan Ariely faked data. P.S. You simply must read the actual post. It is absolutely riveting. Amazing work from the @datacolada.bsky.social crew. And, also, great writing

This was such a fun episode! Kudos to @andymasley.bsky.social for making a dry (yes pun intended) topic so interesting. We also spent the first half talking about effective altruism and its critics and a bit at the end talking about self driving cars. Plus I finish a bottle of whiskey 🥃🥴

Excellent post on the lack of empirical support for stereotype threat, from someone deeply involved in the research. Also, importantly, "stereotype threat isn't real" != "stereotypes are not threatening." These are very different claims, but the former is often taken to mean the latter.

Comparing implicit/explicit measurement wasn't actually the main focus of the project (it's tricky to interpret diffs because these measures differ in lots of ways), but the results suggest a that if you are going to use one, explicit measures might be preferable.

Yeah, totally. I read Singer's arguments and find them very convincing, but also I can't (or won't, I guess) act in a way that's fully consistent with them. It's just human to prefer personal connections and to want to give to causes that feel good!

But I think the article frames this as a trade-off, and in that case you have to be honest that you are making the case that you think people ought to value the cathedral over the lives of desperately poor people. It's morally uncomfortable, but that's the honest way to describe the trade-off.

Bottom 10% in the U.S. would qualify for Medicaid in most states or else ACA subsidies to buy private insurance. There are federal childcare subsidies as well but not sure how extensive they are. Comparing this across countries does seem very difficult because quality can also vary.
