Ofc, use cases like the one described in the RTE article at the beginning of this thread might make sense (both in Irish and English) - there also might be better alternative, I don't know the topic really. But in any case, I'd be wary of making LLM the go-to solution for providing services in Irish

Added to that is the outrage it would be that Irish would be serviced only by chatbot while English-speaking people could get a human service. Or that teaching English would be done by teachers while teaching Irish would be done by bots.

If this wouldn't be a requirement because LLM-based chatbot would be providing the service in NL, I would have stopped learning Dutch after secondary school and wouldn't be able to speak a word. Irish having a very small speaking population really doesn't need "one more reason" not to learn it.

The goal of funding those tools seems to be giving public services chatbot that serves people in Irish (see report). The main reason why I am able to speak Dutch (being a native French speaker in Belgium) is because it was useful professionaly. Public services in Brussels must be bilingual

But my main concern is related to the fact that the development of LLM-based tools for Irish could end-up lowering the need to learn Irish, and therefore reducing the number of Irish-speaker.

On the ethical side, Qomhrá has been developped using the open source model Qwen3, with help from Gemini 2.5 during training, so even if using it isn't feeding stuffs to AI companies, it is not completely indepedent of them. The ethical considerations in the paper don't acknowledge that.

I was reading a few days ago the paper underlying the tool. I am torn, TBH, as it is based on an LLM called Qomhrá. I do feel that developping LLM tools for Irish might become detrimental to the development of Irish in Ireland. Here is the paper BTW: aclanthology.org/2026.loreslm...

I was wondering the same about the RTE Healy-Ray "documentary". When I studied journalism, I learned that proximity between a journalist and politics can be tricky to manage to avoid becoming a tool for them. It feels like irish media will gladly do politicians promotion for audience.

I believe that things in game don't make player feel romance because they are often half-baked (and also because society gives us a very limited representation of what romance is/can be). I believe a lot of mechanics in RPG, life simulation, exploration or puzzle game could very well convey romance
