Going to venture that we are nearing the end of “but it poses no meaningful risk to humans” part, and will be soon moving into the “oops” stage of the H5N1 timeline.
A comic by Xitter user @om_rxd entitled “Bird flu - a timeline”, consisting of a timeline where the first 40% of it is labeled “bird flu isn’t real”, next 40% is labeled “ok, bird flu is real, but it poses no meaningful risk to humans,” and the next 15% is labeled “oops” and the final 5% labeled “fuck”.

Azorellolide! How can you not work on a natural product that starts with "Azo"? I have to say my respect for carbocations has enormously gown through this project. They are just too high in energy and have too many options. But you can tame them! pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/...

Biomimetic Synthesis of Azorellolide via Cyclopropylcarbinyl Cation Chemistry
A concise synthesis of the complex diterpene azorellolide, inspired by speculations on biosynthetic cationic cascades, is presented. The approach, guided by computation, relies on the intramolecular interception of a cyclopropylcarbinyl cation by an appended carboxylate. The successful execution of this strategy was achieved through acid-catalyzed isomerization of a β-lactone in competition with a type I dyotropic rearrangement.

Extremely cool #ChemSkyPaperPile entry from Marcos Suero's team at ICIQ: Stitching a single C into C-C bonds via a C-H insertion/Wagner Meerwein cascade. Lovely way to get to uncommon ring sizes from well-trodden 6 rings!
pubs.acs.org
Single-Carbon Insertion into Single C–C Bonds with Diazirines
A novel platform for the skeletal editing of single C–C bonds via a single-carbon insertion has been developed using diazirines. This strategy involves the photogeneration of arylchlorocarbenes as carbynoid species that undergo site-selective carbene insertion into tertiary C–H bonds and a subsequent Wagner–Meerwein rearrangement promoted by a silver salt. Our skeletal editing strategy based on a formal selective carbyne C–C bond insertion has been demonstrated in six core-to-core conversions, including linear and cyclic benzylic substrates, alkanes and late-stage functionalizations.
