The faces of those condemned by the fall of Priapus IX haunted the arena, but Helena had never expected to see Philomena, the spark of their damnation, the most infamous concubine of the Most High, discarded among them.
She’d been inhumanly beautiful when they’d first met: a mane of sun-red curls, a smile that promised the world, skilled fingers that threatened to pluck out Helena’s heart when they brushed against her hand. And after years of access to all the beauty mods money could buy, Philomena had sculpted herself into a goddess. Even now, disheveled and covered in dust, she looked like she could strip her gladiator’s robes and reveal fine silks underneath. If Helena hadn’t heard her curses when the guards threw her into her cell, she would have thought this was a performance.
Philomena was almost as tall as Helena, but the man across from her made her look dainty. He towered over a head above her, and had the thick, corded muscle of someone who’d known nothing but decades of combat. His skin had the ashen-grey pallor of one brought back to life enough times for revival decay to have claimed most of his faculties. Though, as Helena recalled from her bout with him last month, the decay hadn’t yet claimed his motor skills. He’d been the kind of opponent she’d hated the most: a husk of blood lust and instinct, impossible to outwit because there was no wit left within him.

Helena had still managed to win that bout; she would not have survived being High General of Priapus IX, not survived a decade of the arena with her own mind mostly intact, without a talent for brute force. But Philomena had only her dancer’s speed to avoid her opponent’s fists. She would tire soon enough, and Helena wasn’t sure her opponent had enough humanity left in him to make Philomena’s first death quick.
Helena should have felt something about that. She’d hoped for some sense of satisfaction when she’d heard of this match and had feared she might pity the woman who’d damned her, but even pity would have been better than the nothingness she felt watching Philomena barely avoiding laser barriers as she ducked blow after blow. Maybe it was her own revival decay that left her numb now, though the last thing Helena could recall feeling was sickening fury as the cities she was meant to protect burned.
She was ready to turn back towards the cells when she saw Philomena’s opponent teeter as if drunk. His arm crashed into a laser barrier. Roaring, he stumbled away, only to crash into yet another barrier. He pulled his burned arms around himself and howled.
Narcotics were common contraband in the arena. The guards not only turned a blind eye to them, but some would offer them in exchange for favors from the gladiators. But even if Philomena’s opponent had once been enough of a fool to get high before a match, he was too far gone for such a thing now. Helena turned her gaze back towards Philomena, and saw a relieved smile curling upon her lips.

E.g. "Predatory trans person" is not a neutral villain to write in our current political climate, but it's not helpful to No True Scotsman trans people. It's a writing choice that needs to be strongly reflected on and handled with care because of the current context (doable, but hard)

Like the problem with stereotypes isn't assigning a trait associated with a group of people to a character in that group. What makes something a harmful depiction can't be boiled down to a list of traits a character has. It has to be contextualized

Queer communities are much more comfortable acknowledging that "fat and hairy" is not mutually exclusive to "attractive" (and have a not insignificant number of people who find fat and hairy people attractive for being fat and hairy). And I don't need to explain why a lesbian might be hostile to men

Thinking again about how "harmful stereotypes" are discussed in fiction. Take the example of a fat, hairy, man hating lesbian. The thing is a lot of lesbians *are* fat, hairy, and not very charitable to men. This is also not disconnected from those lesbians being lesbians.
