I think one thing that tends to disproportionately incense me is whenever I see a review complaining that a piece of media didn't make a character's diagnosis explicit Like, yeah, if we're in a modern day city and the character would reasonably have gotten diagnosed, sure. Any other setting tho???

This is part of what I'm referring to with many people demanding stories that reassure them they're a good person. They want the moral instruction because otherwise, rather than processing the reading experience, there's a thrum of "am I bad? am I bad? what if someone finds out I'm bad?"

stories about abuse are allowed to exist without reducing themselves to moral instruction. i think sometimes when people complain about the “romanticization” of abuse, what they're actually objecting to isn't necessarily the way abuse is being represented, but the fact that the representation doesn't provide them with constant moral reassurance. like, there is a difference between “this story frames abuse as desirable or inherently romantic” and “this story depicts abuse in an erotic/ambiguous/complicated way and doesn't repeatedly tell me that abuse is bad, therefore the depiction itself is irresponsible.”

when my masc lesbian aunt died, women just kept coming, screaming, crying, and saying they were her wives. Eventually we just had to start telling them to join the others. They were all devastated to learn about each other. Except for one who came in, kissed her dead mouth and showed us all that they had matching tattoos. She actually won all the mourning wives over and they all agreed she was the wife. It was so weird.

Did not expect more than a few people to see this but yes it really happened, yes it was insane

WIP Wednesday... have a darkly silly moment

“Tell me about your people,” said the prince.
Meshach raised an eyebrow. “You’re going to have to be more specific, or did you want me to regale you with our history?”
“I meant…” the prince frowned at the wooden domes. “We’ll need to hold the mountain border after we depart. Your warriors, healers, and who ever else can be spared will come with us, but the rest of your people will remain here with a contingent of my men. It would be best if I were not approaching this division blindly.”
“How could that matter if your men still govern?”
“My men will be content to let your people govern themselves, so long as your people, how did you put it, bow their heads when need be?”
“You say this, and yet you’re marching all our leaders west.”
The prince shifted one of the wooden domes back and forth, then asked, “When one of your leaders falls in battle, who succeeds him if his sons are yet grown and he has no brothers?”
“His wife,” Meshach said. He looked over the prince’s map, starting with the north most camp: Oved was far too old to be of use in battle, so if the prince was not so cold-blooded as to drag him from his seat, he could lead his own clan — assuming the old goat’s stubbornness didn’t get him killed. As for the rest of the clans, Yiska, Zevida, and Mara were all good women, with cool heads upon their shoulders. Zevida was one of their best trained healers, but the prince could do without her. That just left the central camp. “What of this camp?”
The prince’s gaze grew more focused on his figures. “Do you not have a wife?”
A laugh escaped from Meshach. “You ask me this now?”
“If you have a wife, and if your people would still follow her after you have been…” The prince trailed off.
“Made another man’s bed warmer?” Meshach swallowed another laugh. “I don’t know how my people would react, if I had one. You’ve really put me in a strange position, highness.” He eyed the prince, who only seemed to grow more rigid. “They might still follow my mother."

There are two dominant ways to write romance One is where the love interest exists to satisfy (or fail to satisfy) the PoV character's romantic desires. This is most obvious in media that's meant to be a romantic fantasy, but this way of looking at romance is what gets you "ball and chain" jokes

“this person is bad so their work was always bad” is also a really dangerous view to take because it leads to - unconscious or not - a bias towards “but I do like this other person’s work, ergo they must be a good person” which, as we have seen over and over, is simply not true
