And it is in our own self interest. We are getting training from Ukraine to better our abilities with new tech. Access to battle-test our own local drone industry, and giving us a pathway to more independent defence ability at a lower cost. (Which I thought was a Greens policy?)

Opposing military aid to Ukraine is not a ‘non-violent’ position, it is an explicit selection between the two available positions, both violent. You can’t say ‘we oppose Russia’, without then explaining, with what?

ASRC’s stolen vans worth over $100,000
Refugee charity, ASRC is pleading for the return of two stolen vans worth more than $100,000 combined. The Melbourne-based, independently funded Asylum Seeker Resource Centre says the food catering social enterprise vans play a vital role. Not surprised: $800 a fortnight won’t pay rent, run a car or buy groceries all at the same time. How do people survive? And if there’s a crisis, omg. Many on Jobseeker are older, unwell, not able to manage or get regular work. It can happen to anyone. So much cruelty in the decision making 😞

Leaving a bomb with a timer in a building doesn't get reported as "bomb tries to blow up building", and OpenAI's employees designing an extremely clumsy, badly designed self-prompting language model hooked up to public actions that can cause harm shouldn't be reported that way either

I keep on saying that the primary use case for AI is as a liability shield. As long as they can maintain the fiction that the AI is an independent agent, they can argue that they aren't responsible for its actions. This seems like a place where some very simple laws could fix the problem.

But that’s not the case. People set AI up. They are the ones who set harmful things in action. And so they are the ones who should be held responsible.

Imagine if, instead of regulating drones (which we did!), we instead decided to let drone companies self-regulate, and ALSO dedicated tons of money and time to "problems" like "what if, in 1000 years, hyper-intelligent dogs learn to fly drones into mailmen." This is what we are doing with AI.

It becomes a LOT easier to argue to the general public that we shouldn't let the AI industry regulate itself when you can ALSO produce clear evidence that much of the AI industry appears to be steered by genuinely crazy weirdos with anti-social and anti-human ideas.

The NGV's stained glass ceiling. It's so magical to lay there and watch the light move across the room. It's so enormous and impossible to take it all in at once. (It's the largest stained glass ceiling in the world, but I'm not sure there is much competition.)
A photo of The Great Hall at the National Gallery of Victoria. The stained glass ceiling is about 13 metres high, 15 metres wide, and 51 metres long. It has an abstract rainbow pattern with tall poles holding up sections of the ceiling. The light is gently shining through the window.A closer photo of the stained glass showing the various patterns, shapes, and colours.A wider photo of the hall showing people laying on the ground looking up to the ceiling.A shot of the full length of the ceiling all 15m wide and 51m long.

A drawing of Elizabeth Bennet, a lovely young woman with her long hair tied up nearly under a ribbon and wearing what is most likely a neo-classically inspired dress, looking pensive, two letters in her hand. Meanwhile Darcy, a handsome but stern-looking fellow, looks longingly at her. Also there is me, a little gremlin in big round glasses, skulking about in the background and hoping that they kiss.

The accompanying text reads “Trung reads Pride and Prejudice for the first time, somehow.”

Interesting warning from Justice Beach to the government in a robodebt ruling published yesterday on what it means in the future re AI. www.austlii.edu.au/cgi-bin/view...
252. This Robodebt debacle is something that we have to learn the lessons from or should I
say Commonwealth ministers and their departments have to learn the lessons from.
253. Surely ministers must properly inform themselves of the technical and legal complexities of automated systems and schemes to which members of the public are
to be subjected. Such a motivation and skill set are not optional extras. Further, the concept of being a responsible minister does not mean finding a public servant to take responsibility for the policy that you have sought to push through. And nor is the role of a minister simply to educate yourself about the policy through a one page document. And nor is the intellectual exercise simply limited to following the instruction on a "post it" note, which tells
you where to place your signature on the executive minute.254. Now when dealing with automated processes and systems, any moral hazard problem becomes magnified. If you have not conscientiously and diligently taken steps to either master the detail yourselt, or made sure that others reporting to you have done so, you are likely as in this case to inflict real harm on others in imposing automated systems or processes. And as in this case, the relevant ministers and their departments had the freedom and control to take great risks with Robodebt and its implementation,
yet they were insulated and detached from the consequences of such risks if they came to fruition, which they obviously did.
255. Now why am I making these points?
Robodebt is over as a system or process, although not of course for the victims and their families, many of whom are still suffering significantly in its aftermath, and some whose spirit only remains in our
memory.256. Today we of course have generative artificial intelligence. And we will later move into artificial general intelligence. The benefits and rewards of such systems will be several orders of magnitude above the types of automated systems that we have seen in the past. But the complexity and risks of such systems and processes will be equally if not more magnified or amplified.
257. Surely the lessons learnt from Robodebt can be put to good advantage, not for the technology as such which is morally neutral, but for its human designers, implementers and controllers.

THE VATICAN IS CALLING IT A SCHISM I REPEAT HOUSTON, WE HAVE A SCHISM
Therefore, this Dicastery, in the faithful exercise of the functions entrusted to it, considers it necessary to state that this act constituted the delict of schism, with the canonical consequences for the sacred ministers and lay faithful involved. Indeed, as was already declared in 1988, "such disobedience-which implies in practice the rejection of the Roman primacy—constitutes a schismatic act" (cf. John Paul II, Apostolic Letter Ecclesia Dei, 3).
