Thank you, Uncle Fred. You would’ve hated the current hellscape but the books and music you gave me still help me through it.
An inscription in my copy of Men in the Off Hours that reads “yes, I’m still pushing Anne Carson. Love, your uncle Fred”

My intro to poetry class is kind of a "what if The Mighty Ducks was a tragedy?" kind of situation but the other day we were doing "Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking" and this earnest student raised her hand and said, "This might be crazy but what if without death there *is* no love?"

My PhD advisor, Peggy Sanday, published Fraternity Gang Rape (1990). She found gang rape functions as male bonding through domination: men use women to prove masculinity, gain status, & demonstrate loyalty. Group norms normalize coercion, erase consent, & institutional privilege shields perpetrators

Seems true to life. I’m not a poet but I imagine you don’t go out every day thinking I’m going to have a fleeting but life changing encounter with a beautiful, anonymous Beatrice. 99 times out of a 100 it’s going to be some chicken-neck 26yo yelling at someone on the bus for stepping on his feet.

Possibly just a stoner thought, but has anyone else thought of the story in Queneau’s Exercises de Style as a kind of prosaic, deflationary rewriting of “À Une Passante”? -In the street vs on a bus -Majestic femme vs ridiculous homme -Feston/ourlet vs hat with cord -no 2nd meeting vs 2nd encounter

In class on Tues we'll talk a bit abt the history of Tolstoy College, the anarchist college @ Buffalo. I planned to offer some context re: UB's progressivism in media studies, xprmental 🎞️ + poetics in the 60s + 70s. Learned (belatedly) that Buffalo just eliminated its whole legendary poetics pgm 😭

And they ended with Make a Salad. They didn’t have enough to go around, so they distributed to those who most enthusiastically expressed interest – who, in a very un-Knowlesian non-coincidence, were all the young white men 🙄
