#OpenAccess The Function of the Partially-Opened Spathe of Pinellia pedatisecta (Araceae) as a Pitfall Pollinator Trap Kohei Yanagisawa, Tetsuya K Matsumoto ▶️ doi.org/10.1111/1442... aroid/ deceptive #pollination system/ introduced species/ #pollinator shift/ trap flower

Graphical abstract: Pinellia pedatisecta has a simplified inflorescence structure, compared to its congeners with highly specialized trap pollination systems. However, our study suggests that P. pedatisecta also captures and releases pollinating insects by the spathe movement during flowering season.

Graphical abstract:
• Kroenleinia grusonii and Echinocactus platyacanthus are native and endemic to Mexico, both have ecological and economic importance and are endangered species.
• The position in which seeds develop on the parental plant can have effects on physical and physiological characteristics.
• Seed position on parental plant of Kroenleinia spp. and Echinocactus spp. may affect its physical or physiological quality.

Flowcytometric and Allozymic Studies on the Korean Dandelion (Taraxacum, Asteraceae), With Special Reference to the Hybrid Origin of Taraxacum coreanum Nakai Tatsuyoshi Morita et al ▶️ doi.org/10.1111/1442... #OpenAccess allotetraploid/ facultative agamospermy
Graphical abstract: We found that the Korean tetraploid Taraxacum coreanum (Co) shows fixed heterozygosity at two dimeric enzyme loci, sod-1 (aaab) and mdh-1 (bddd). Allele-specific comparisons indicate that sod-1 ‘a’ and mdh-1 ‘d’ are characteristic of the triploid T. mongolicum (Mo) whereas the ‘b’ alleles at both loci match Korean diploids (e.g., T. hallaisanense, Ha). Together, these results support a hybrid origin for T. coreanum between T. mongolicum and Korean diploid species, corroborated by flow cytometry.

Graphical abstract: Nests are important links between seabirds and plants, and are thought to initiate epizoochory of seabirds. 24 seed species were found in pelagic seabird nests, and 16 species of them had the potential to adhere to seabirds. Our finding indicates an overlooked pathway for the long distance dispersal of plants; epizoochory mediated by nests.

Graphical abstract: Bredia hirsuta, a small pollen flower, is buzz-pollinated by Amegilla dulcifera in a posture separating ventral gripping from dorsal stigma contact. The bee grips short-stamen ventrally, while the stigma contacts the dorsal abdomen near long-stamen anther tips. This posture supports division of labour between dimorphic stamens even in small flowers.

Graphical abstract: Across all sampled ramets in a fragmented forest landscape, 83% were clonal, indicating that clonal expansion accounted for most of the present population structure of Wisteria floribunda. Compared with a continuous old-growth forest, the fragmented forest showed substantially greater clonal dominance and spatial coverage by genets.

Graphical abstract: Heteranthery in Commelina communis integrates a temporally structured two-step selfing system: prior selfing via bud pollination followed by delayed selfing mediated by the medium-length stamen (M-anther). By functioning both as a pollinator reward and a mediator of delayed selfing, the M-anther links outcrossing with reproductive assurance within a single flower.

Graphical abstract: In extreme heavy snowfall environments (maximum snow depth of 5 m), dominant species such as Pterocarya rhoifolia and Aesculus turbinata exhibited different survival strategies—sprouting, dwarfing, and layering—compared to their tall forms in heavy snowfall areas (maximum 2 m). Additionally, Acer nipponicum, common in snowy regions, was also dominant, suggesting that montane riparian forests under extreme snow accumulation are maintained by tree species adapted to such conditions.

Graphical abstract: As shown in the figure, the white-circled black locust seeds absorbed water and swelled, whereas the red-circled seeds remained unswollen. This observed cryptic seed heteromorphism in germination is likely attributable not only to the development of an impermeable seed coat during maturation but also to physical damage caused by insects.

Graphical abstract: Sasa species (Poaceae: Bambusoideae) are generally considered monocarpic mass flowering plants. Although seedling regeneration after small-scale flowering has been largely overlooked, we demonstrated that some seedlings of Sasa veitchii var. tyugokuensis derived from small-scale flowering survived for 11 years. These findings suggest that small-scale flowering may contribute to the regeneration of Sasa spp.

#OpenAccess Phylogenetic and Population Genetic Analysis Decipher the Taxonomic Consistency on Cryptic Betula costata Trautv. (Betulaceae) Populations in Japan and the Process on Its Divergence and Isolation Takaki Aihara et al doi.org/10.1111/1442... leaf morphology
Graphical abstract: Betula costata, a deciduous broad-leaved tree habits in the cool-cold temperate forests in East Asia, is an ideal species for studying the persistence of relict plants. Although cryptic populations of this species have been reported in central Japan in recent years, species delineation of them using molecular evidence has not been undertaken. This study is the first to estimate the phylogenetic position of putative B. costata populations in Japan and supported the classification of them as B. costata. Our analysis also suggests that B. costata in Japan diverged from continental populations and has persisted in isolated enclaves with benign environmental conditions since the Last Glacial Maximum.
