#OpenAccess Urbanization Effects on the Community Structure of Saproxylic Arthropods in Warm-Temperate Japan Satoshi Miyazaki, Fumito Koike ▶️ doi.org/10.1111/1440... deadwood volume/ diversity and abundance/ facultatively saproxylic/ food habit/ obligatory saproxylic
Graphical abstract: This study examined saproxylic arthropod communities in various landscapes, ranging from large to fragmented urban forests, and compared the structure and composition of these communities. The results showed that communities could be classified into three types based on species composition and that arthropod community types were correlated with forest size (A was large forested area, B was intermediate, C was fragmented urban forest). Rarefaction curves based on the cumulative number of individuals revealed that fragmented urban forest communities had significantly lower species richness than large forested area communities.

#OpenAccess Guild-Specific Frog Responses to Natural Habitat Structure Gradients in an Atlantic Forest Mosaic Juliane Pereira-Ribeiro et al ▶️ doi.org/10.1111/1440... amphibians/ environmental filtering/ functional traits/ multi-species modeling/ occupancy modeling
Graphical abstract: This study investigated how habitat structure gradients are associated with frog species richness and occupancy in a naturally heterogeneous Atlantic Forest mosaic. We found that frog richness and occupancy patterns varied among ecological guilds and were highest in sites associated with lower values of the habitat structure gradient, which also contained important habitat resources such as bromeliads and temporary ponds. Our results suggest that habitat structure and resource distribution jointly shape amphibian community patterns and highlight the importance of maintaining diverse habitat mosaics for conservation.

Scavenging Attraction of a Cyclopoid Copepod to Zooplankton Carcasses Hiromichi Suzuki, Jotaro Urabe ▶️ doi.org/10.1111/1440... behavioral experiment/ chemical cue/ detritus chain
Graphical abstract: We experimentally demonstrated that a cyclopoid copepod, Thermocyclops taihokuensis, can function as a planktonic scavenger in freshwater ecosystems. T. taihokuensis actively approached and attacked cladoceran carcasses and was attracted to carcass-derived chemical cues, indicating that chemical cues are key for detecting carcasses. These results suggest that T. taihokuensis contributes to both grazing and detrital food chains.

<SPECIAL FEATURE> #UltramaficEcology2025 #OpenAccess Dominance of Picea glehnii in the Serpentine Forests of Hokkaido: Perspectives for an Ecological Understanding Florian Delerue et al ▶️ doi.org/10.1111/1440... functional traits/ plant–soil feedbacks/ regeneration niche
Graphical abstract: We question why Picea glehnii dominates serpentine forests in Hokkaido. First, based on functional trait measurements and a comparison with another coniferous species present in the region, Abies sachalinensis, we report preliminary results consistent with better adaptation of P. glehnii to serpentine soils. We then discuss other non-exclusive hypotheses, based on the literature and observations of regeneration microsites, to provide a comprehensive view of the potential mechanisms involved. Adaptation to soil disturbance and the release of negative biotic interactions on serpentine soils in blowdown areas, promoting successful colonization and regeneration of P. glehnii, are likely complementary drivers. Finally, we propose future research directions to test these hypotheses and clarify the preferential distribution of P. glehnii and A. sachalinensis on different substrates.

Graphical abstract: Potentially toxic metal(loid)s (PTMs) bioaccumulated across a plant-herbivore-predator food chain. Irrespective of soil concentrations, female crickets actively selected PTM-enriched leaves, while predatory mantids showed no developmental impairment. Trophic transfer of PTMs was rather influenced more by a function of intrinsic species traits than by environmental exposure.

Optimization of Ecological Network in the Yellow River Basin: A Framework of Complex Network Theory Xingrong Fu, Wei Wei et al ▶️ x.gd/yhqfj circuit theory/ ecosystem services
Graphical abstract: In this study, ecosystem services assessment, Morphological Spatial Pattern Analysis, and circuit theory were used to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of the ecological network in the Yellow River Basin from 2005 to 2023. Subsequently, complex network theory was applied to optimize the network structure, and ten new corridors were added in 2023 based on the low-betweenness first strategy. The results indicate that the complex network optimization significantly enhanced the overall stability and connectivity of the ecological network.

Graphical abstract: Serpentine geochemistry and moisture regime shape bacterial biocrust communities in the Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa. While coarse taxonomic metrics (alpha and beta diversity) showed no significant differences, ASV-level analyses revealed strong taxonomic shifts linked to soil chemistry and moisture, with numerous serpentine-associated taxa correlated with metal-rich, low-calcium conditions. In contrast, functional profiles were comparatively constrained, with minimal changes in overall pathway composition. Moisture regime influenced the allocation of functions within biocrusts of serpentine soils, with erratic moisture favoring stress tolerance and detoxification, and frequent moisture favoring fermentation and cell-envelope biosynthesis. PICRUSt2 captured broad functional patterns but failed to resolve pathway-level variation.

Graphical abstract: We investigated seasonal variations and tissue-level distributions of Mn and associated elements in two Japanese Ilex species using time-series leaf analyses and benchtop micro–X-ray fluorescence imaging. Our results revealed strong temporal synchrony between Mn and Ca accumulation, species-specific Mn–Zn relationships, and clear spatial partitioning of Mn, Zn, and Ca within leaf tissues. These findings demonstrate that Mn hyperaccumulation in Ilex occurs through a multi-element sequestration strategy without a concomitant reduction in Ca concentrations.

Graphical abstract: In this study, we examined microarthropod abundance and community composition in adjacent, disturbed, and undisturbed ultramafic sites to assess the long-term impacts of historical chromite mining. Order-level richness did not differ between disturbed and undisturbed sites; however, community composition differed significantly, with Collembola and Acari showing pronounced loss of abundance following mining disturbance. Our results indicate that historical chromite mining has reduced soil microarthropod abundance and diversity in disturbed serpentine ecosystems.

Graphical abstract: This study investigated foliar elemental characteristics of common woody species growing on ultramafic soils in Hokkaido, Japan. Leaves from ultramafic sites showed consistently lower Ca/Mg ratios than those from non-ultramafic sites, while foliar Ca/Mg ratios did not directly mirror soil Ca/Mg ratios. These findings indicate that ultramafic-soil-derived chemical signatures persist under forested conditions but are modified by soil–plant interactions.

Graphical abstract: This study investigated how species richness and biotope space affect phytoextracted nickel mass. Growing monocultures and bicultures of two endemic species across a nickel stress gradient revealed that bicultures generally enhanced soil nickel bioavailability, aboveground biomass, and nickel phytoextraction compared to monocultures. These results support the stress-gradient hypothesis, suggesting that facilitative interactions between hyperaccumulator and non-hyperaccumulator species can improve nickel phytoextraction in stressful, nickel-rich environments.

Graphical abstract: We conducted a comparative ionomic analysis of Lycopodiaceae and Selaginellaceae collected from diverse soil types in Japan, including serpentine soils and solfatara fields, to examine how evolutionary lineage and soil environment shape elemental composition in lycophytes. Family-level ionomic profiles were more strongly associated with lineage than with environment, while characteristic shifts in specific elements were observed under extreme soil conditions, such as magnesium-rich serpentine soils and acidic solfatara fields. These results indicate that lycophytes exhibit conserved, lineage-specific elemental homeostasis alongside flexible ionomic responses to extreme environments.

Graphical abstract: Our study explored lichen succession in ultramafic habitats by comparing the communities of an undisturbed rock outcrop (a) and a chromite mine (b) that was abandoned a half century ago. We found that the rocks in the chromite mine (dark blue ellipse) hosted a different lichen community from the undisturbed outcrop (light blue ellipse) and had significantly lower richness and cover of lichens. Our study highlights the slow pace of recovery of saxicolous communities and underlines the importance of preserving undisturbed lithic habitats.
