I expect the next book to go more into what the deepness actually is/was and maybe develop the magic tech a bit (there was that thing where Vin drew energy from the mist).

Ok what I don’t understand is why Rashek would keep the OG hero of ages’ logbook around if he killed him and took his place. Seems like a huge risk to keep it around. I feel like there’s something else there.

I wonder if Vin can sense through copper clouds the same way the lord ruler can because she can also do feruchemy too? Like we don’t actually know her mom’s heritage. And there’s her mom’s earring too…

yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
So what like the inquisitors are actually running everything and just keeping the lord ruler complacent and ignorant or something? Or was the young version cuz of feruchemy

So if I had to guess the Lord Ruler/Hero of Ages destroyed the previous shard or shard vessel and then took up the shard himself? And it’s some evil type of shard like odium.

I guess what I’m trying to say is, I don’t think the article is getting flack for publishing the detailed cost estimations, it’s getting flack for presenting that info in a misleading or disingenuous way. I think you can appreciate having the info without agreeing with the way it was presented

yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
A pro-ALTO framing could be, this shows that ridership demand is actually pretty elastic wrt service speed/reliability/quality, so a faster and more reliable rail service would perform better? Idk this is just how the article’s bias came off to me while reading.
010
yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Also later in the article it presents the projected revenue -> then says that via ridership is substantially down, I think obviously you’re supposed to infer that this projection is unrealistic or optimistic, right?

yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Unfortunately many people don’t read beyond the headline, which frames that number as a cost overrun. Just look at the top comments on the article and see now negative the sentiment is, it’s pretty much all comments saying “we don’t need this” “it’s too expensive” etc.

yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Idk, they could have just as well written “internal documents show ALTO capital costs are within original estimates” but went for the sensational headline that makes it seem like there was a cost increase or hidden costs they aren’t telling the public about
Except from the article: “For "infrastructure capital," the estimated cost is $83.5-billion, which is within Alto's publicly cited range of $6o-billion to $90-billion.”

Ok to the TTC’s credit they fixed this by Wednesday morning so it only caused two days of delays. I really wish they would communicate more proactively and not just after the fact. Will we ever stop playing slow zone whack a mole?

yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 24/08/2026
This new slow zone was so painful this morning, causing not just this slowdown but train traffic all the way up to Eglinton. I’m sure it’s going to cause unsafe levels of crowding on Tues/Wed/Thurs during AM rush hour. Doubt the TTC is going to proactively try to redirect traffic tho :///

We did a wool dying workshop at black creek pioneer village, run by the Toronto Art Club. We used alum mordant, dyes from avocados, onion skins, cabbage, and turmeric, plus iron and copper solutions as modifiers. Was really surprised at how bright of a green colour I got from cabbage + turmeric!

The TTC has provided a table on "Reduced Speed Zones" on their website for the past few years. It just has a static map and is hard to interpret the real impact on riders. I have created a tool that pulls this data daily and will provide real info on how this delays riders.

Driving a car is incredibly dangerous, it should be one of the most regulated experiences on earth, and it is very upsetting to watch people who correctly don’t trust the cops turn against automated enforcement because the alternative is relying on a cop’s judgement to enforce the laws.

Why is the line shut down between 9 stations due to a security incident at SB College? Makes no sense. Announcements are inaudible and unhelpful. My train is literally in this zone right now (NB Bloor) and is still in service. 🤷

I do really like when movies mix languages like this, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Decision to Leave, and Call Me By Your Name spring to mind
000
yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
There’s not a ton of dialogue or exposition in the film so I do think small things like what language characters speak to each other matters a lot. Eg I may be wrong but Ms Suen starts off w/Cantonese when talking to Ms Chan for the first time and by the time she leaves, she’s using Shanghainese?
100
yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I didn’t even notice until like halfway through the movie that the landlady and others speak Shanghainese. I’ll have to go back and pay some attention to the scenes, though I can only tell with like 80% confidence which one it is 😅 I think I can get tripped up by characters speaking with accents
100
yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 03/08/2026
I watched In The Mood For Love and I feel a bit despondent at how much I have completely lost the ability to understand Shanghainese, which I could do when I was younger because half my family comes from a city that speaks a very similar dialect.

It’s a big if, but I think we should focus on how we can ensure the datacentres will do that, instead of blanket rejecting them
010
yaning @yannning.bsky.social · 28/07/2026
I think it depends a lot on how flexible the datacentre loads can be. Since the main issue with renewables is intermittency, if large industrial loads can be flexible enough to consume energy only when the power is clean/cheap/abundant and stop when it’s not, they can incentivize clean generation
