Does anyone here have a favorite in-class exercise for helping students consider how algorithms work? Ideally this is completely non-computational—I just want them to try to think procedurally about how they would need to transform data—ideally historical/texty data—step by step

This is called The Moss Garden. A shady, moist, ferny little gully deep within the gorge, a little waterfall and some palm trees. The steps up to a limestone amphitheatre. Massive rockface, palms, some ladders, and a bit of blue sky just visible. The Art Gallery: Aboriginal rock art on a huge stone wall of the gorge, dappled sunlight. Looking up at a limestone wall on one side of the gorge, early morning sunlight, some trees below.

Image shows a tree diagram where each node is a step and its children are the steps producing the stages required for this step, up to the leaves which are the ingredients. It is formatted as a table where the leaves are in the leftmost column and nodes span the rows that contain their children. The top two rows seem to have a special function, the span all columns and contain preparatory steps.
