Sara Nelson abstained from voting as a council member, now abstains from research and writing for her NIMBY slop factory. I note, but do not admire, the consistency of the grift. That said, I wish we had Seattle's problem of a progressive wave big enough to generate this level of dumb opposition.

I think The Urbanist is such a singular organization in the way it combines journalism, advocacy, and community building. It’s a big part of why Seattle is transforming so rapidly (mostly in good ways!), and it’s why I’ve been a member for years. Consider doing likewise!

Last night we celebrated the opening of our new dedicated bus lane for the 8 bus on Denny by doing the obvious thing: racing it again. Last summer, Seattleites raced the bus on foot and beat it. This time around, with the lane up and running, it wasn’t even close.

Sign at crosswalk on bike trailSign reading:

1. Wait for break in traffic before pushing the button
2. Push button to alert motorist
3. Wait for vehicle to stop
4. Cross carefully

Here in Yakima, the Plaths (wealthy agriculture family) are throwing their money around as usual. Peter Plath is in for $35,000. A few others, mostly business owners. But worth repeating the quoted post that this doesn't mean their business or its employees support what the owners do🧵:

It's "cruise night" in Yakima so downtown is more infested with cars than usual. Not realizing this, I went to a beach-themed Mexican bar and there was music playing out of a Corvette parked in front... continuously drowned out by oppressively loud drive-by exhaust. Good ceviche and michelada tho.

The PNW "Seattle freeze" (a misnomer -- it's not limited to Seattle) is just another flavor of this. Otherizing newcomers is shitty. Only two things are necessary: Love where you live and love its people. If that describes you, then you're a local.

Roads may let the U-Hauls get here, but livability and affordability once people arrive depend on all the other modes: Rails, bike paths, sidewalks and trails. Prioritize funding for that. Not more lanes for cars.
