Schupfnudeln in the pan, Fleischkäse in the oven, and Généreuse de Vitry 2024 bottle conditioned single tree tannic cider in my glass. I’ve lost enough weight this year, need energy for pressing tomorrow. 😜 Incidentally, one of my favourite ciders we have made. Don’t get bittersweets often here.
A bottle and glass of Kertelreiter cider, as named in the post. A lovely light amber colour.

BTW, Lady's Well Brewery was never meant to be just a porter brewery, it wanted to compete with the bigger Scottish and English breweries by producing a range of ales and porters when it first opened. That was an eye-opener for me when I researched it. Also, not the same 'stout' as now of course ...

I hope this important post makes people reconsider the dangers of gambling, seek help if needed and question why pubs have these betting machines davidjesudason.substack.com/p/pubs-gambl...
A graphic of a pint and a roulette wheel "There's only so much drugs or alcohol you can take before it gets too much," Harj says. "Gambling keeps you conscious with cliff-hangers all the time and rather than spending £100 [on booze] you can spend £100 in seconds."We don't gamble as much as white ethnicities but the South Asian ones that do are five times more likely to suffer severe gambling-related harms,"
Harj says.
In other words South Asians might not gamble as much but we do have huge problems when it comes to gambling addiction.Just ask the family of Inder Daggar.
The former captain for the Slough men's hockey team was jailed for six years after swindling about £3m from loved ones, friends and investors to fund his addiction.
"South Asians don't think it's a problem but there's a massive amount of secrecy, more so than in alcohol or drugs," Harj says. "It's sharam [a widely used Asian term for shamel because they fear being ostracised or being shunned. It happens a lot more than you think."

Last week a paper came out, showing that chimpanzees daily consume significant amounts of alcohol. A thread where I walk through why the paper matters, then the paper itself.
Screenshot of: "S c i e n c e A d v A n c e S | R e S e A R c h A R t i c l e1 of 10B I O L O G I C A L A N T H R O P O L O G YEthanol ingestion via frugivory in wild chimpanzeesAleksey Maro 1,2*, Aaron A. Sandel 3, Bi Z. A. Blaiore4,5, Roman M. Wittig5,6,John C. Mitani7, Robert Dudley1,8Human attraction to alcohol may derive from an evolutionary association between ethanol and fruits consumed byanimals in nature. Fermentative yeasts are widespread in the terrestrial biosphere, and simple carbohydrates un-derpinning ethanol production are commonplace within fruits. We determined ethanol concentrations withinfruits representing a substantial portion of the diet of our closest living relatives, the chimpanzees. Ripe fruit pulpfrom 20 angiosperm species in Côte d’Ivoire and Uganda contained an average value of 0.31 (± 0.21 SD) and 0.32%(± 0.20) ethanol (weight/weight), respectively, as scaled by annual chimpanzee feeding time per species at eachsite. Chimpanzees typically eat ~4.5 kilograms of fruit per day, corresponding to an estimated ethanol ingestion of14 grams (±9), or the equivalent of 1.4 (±0.9) standard drinks by international standards. These findings are con-sistent with the hypothesis that ethanol is widespread within tropical fruits and that modern predisposition to al-cohol consumption derives from ancestral exposure to this psychoactive substance among frugivorous primates."
