I don't know why this is so hard for some people to grasp. If we extend our use of fossil gas, rather than going all-out for grid batteries, heat pumps and induction hobs, we extend our dependence on *foreign* sources of gas, regardless of whether we also use the UK's last remaining reserves. 🧵

The war is pushing the EU to accelerate its plans to shift away from fossil fuels. I suspect this is true for pretty much every country in the world that isn't a major FF producer, which is most of them.

Heat pumps are the most efficient heating technology ever invented. They harvest and compress pre existing heat in the air, ground or water and transport it where it is needed. That energy is all around us. And it does not have to pass through the Strait of Hormuz.

Looking at the year-to-date shows the 2024 global mean sea surface temperature anomaly (departure from an average) as the highest on record. Data for this graph is constructed from NOAA ERSSTv5 and averaged over each January to November period.
Green line graph time series of average sea surface temperature anomalies for each January to November period from 1900 through 2024. There is large interannual variability, but an overall long-term increasing trend. Anomalies are computed relative to a 1981-2010 baseline.

Nobody ever planted a tree in this photo. It was a working gravel pit 30 years ago. We need to get over our obsession with planting trees and let nature do the job. The results are just SO much better. It's also about realising we are not, in fact, central to everything. 🌍
