If you were forced to bet on which university courses of study still will be relevant in 50 years, languages, literature, history, philosophy, and arts are all pretty good wagers. They have an excellent track record over the past thousand years or so.

Here is a little story about the #earlymodern emoticon "<3" and the complex symbolic meaning of this typographical entity that I posted yesterday. Follow me, for catholic symbolism and some #bookhistory, dear #skystorians of the blue skies. Here we go...
A detail from a page of a 1702 German publication with the title "Reimb Dich, Oder Ich Liß Dich, Das ist: Allerley Materien, Discurs, Concept, und Predigen, welche bißhero in underschiedlichen Tractätlein gedruckt worden" (vd18 10307974). The author explains on this page, and on pages before and after the Holy Trinity. Part of the detailed explanation if a human heart, made of a V (in German printing a "U") and a three as a cap. In the text, the "V" stands for the Latin "unum" (meaning: one, as in: together as one) and the number 3 is of course the Holy Trinity. This heart symbol, explained in the text, looks like a contemporary emoticon: <3 . The typographical entity highlighted consists of a the letter "i", the number "3", the word "HOMO" (in which all letters are crossed out except for the "M"), a small "z" as part of the M, and the mentioned emoticon: a "V" with a "3" on top.

The semiliterate people who use chatgpt like to point to calculators as a precedent of assistive technology but the thing is: calculators actually calculate. A calculator really does let you outsource calculation. It does exactly what it is supposed to do, and marketed as doing, reproducibly.

Quelle excellente idée d'avoir réuni les éléphants médiévaux dans une seule œuvre! www.uliwestphal.de/elephas-anth...
Elephas Anthropogenus
Uli Westphal (2008)
After the fall of the Roman Empire, elephants virtually disappeared from Western Europe.
Since there was no real knowledge of how this animal actually looked, illustrators had to rely on oral and written transmissions to morphologically reconstruct the elephant, thus reinventing an actual existing creature. This tree diagram traces the evolution of the elephant depiction throughout the middle ages up to the age of enlightenment

A rectangle metal baking pan filled with white sand on a stovetop. There are white goose feathers sticking out of it. The caption reads: Quill Making in 3 parts, Heating up the quills. Those same white goose feathers in another rectangle metal baking tray with very clearly burnt ends. Caption reads: Whoops! I burned them and they smell like burnt hair!A quill pen and an open bottle of calligraphy ink on a sheet of white paper that reads: Holy crap it works. Hello. Not perfect but not the worst thing I've ever made! Caption reads: is a start! I only destroyed 6 feathers and made my house smell like burnt hair... TOTALLY WORTH IT!!

For a little light heartedness, my friends and I are playing pick 3 fantasy conclave. Here are the rules if anyone is interested 😂 I'm going to ask about wild cards
Black text on white background reading:

Fantasy Conclave: Pick 3 Edition

How to Play:
- Each player picks three Cardinals ranked A, B, and C
- Each player picks a team name
- Each player will submit a guess for the number of days it will take to choose a new pope
- Picks must be locked before the conclave starts

Scoring
- If your A pick becomes pope, you win!
- If no A picks hit, check B picks
- If no B picks hit, check C picks
- If no picks hit, the player with the closest number of days without going over wins

There is an example of how it all works, but I think it's pretty self explanatory, so I'm leaving it out of the alt text

Summary
3 picks. 1 days guess. 1 hilarious team name
First correct pick wins, or closest days guess wins
Good luck and may your cardinal ascend faster than a smoke signal!

What is the man of the left doing with his body?! Nothing models better how the value of learning is in the PROCESS of coming to understand something perplexing & not in the PRODUCT of simply knowing it than my discussion with students today of this gorgeous initial from the St Albans Psalter. 1/n
Two large and two small figures are contained within the initial letter 'A'. One large man points to the text and points to the ear of his neighbor who twists his body impossibly around the leg of the letter 'A' with a gigantic arm. The two small men flank the large central figures, and gaze up at them.

Between 1927 & 1933 four nuns at Eibingen Abbey replicated by hand the renowned manuscript of Hildegard von Bingen’s magnum opus, Scivias. When the original 12C manuscript disappeared after WWII, the replica became a facsimile-original. I tell the story of that facsimile here tinyurl.com/3mcb6vt7
Hildegard von Bingen's Scivias in Weimar
Germany: Media Theory by Hand
Sonja Drimmer
Abstract Between 1929 and 1930 a feud over the legitimacy of reproductions of works of art erupted in the pages of the culture periodical Der Kreis. Later dubbed the Hamburg Facsimile Debate, the dispute involved many of the day's most eminent curators and academics in art and art history and became a focal point for emerging ideas about authenticity and the educative impact of the replica in the Weimar Republic. Even as the intelligentsia were publicly quarreling over the epistemological stakes of the facsimile, four nuns at Eibingen Abbey were meticulously hand-copying the most renowned illuminated twelfth-century manuscript of Hildegard von Bingen's visionary summa, Scivias. This essay pits the Facsimile Debate against the facsimile craft of the Eibingen nuns, situating both within the context of new reproductive technologies devised specifically for representing medieval artifacts. It argues for a historicizing approach to the notion of authenticity, which bears on how we think about mediation and the surrogate in our research and teaching today.
