The sea is filled with weird little guys, but this one is among the weirdest. This is Thetys vagina, named for a sea nymph & the Latin for 'sheath', named before the latter word gained its current usage. Is it a cross between a Gummi bear & a xenomorph? No, it's a 'salp'. (📷: Kayleigh Grant).

The elongated snoot on this fish gives it the name 'elephantnose' (Gnathonemus petersii), but the weirdness doesn't end there. The nose contains a structure called a 'Schnauzenorgan' that lets it see with electricity, creating whole models of the world in its giant brain based on electric fields.

A dark blue/grey fish with a long thin nose like an elephant's trunk, a dark ocelli covered anal fin area, and some greenery in the background.

The device in use here in this 1980's article is an 'acoustic coupler', which preceded the direct-connect modem. The ORIGINAL 'public wifi'. It's worth remembering that prior to RJ 11 outlets (~1980), phones were often hard-wired, making these devices the only way to connect devices to telephony.
