Ian and I are 9 months into our AI mapping experiment. Pace of tech change has been staggering. So has shift in attitudes. Haters now use AI for their own work & find it useful. Those hiding behind fear, and using excuses as warnings is dwindling. They're usually ill-informed.

ca. 1944 • Alberta Legislature Building

A stunning bird's-eye view looking north, of the Legislature & South Grounds. The 5th & final Fort Edmonton (1830~1915) stood just left of today's lawn bowling green and clubhouse - visible in the foreground.

The Alberta Legislature Building, which officially opened in 1912, was built directly adjacent to the site of the Fort Edmonton trading post. The surrounding grounds evolved into a massive public hub, accommodating formal gardens, active community sports grounds—like the classic lawn bowling greens visible in early landscape grids—and structural terraces cascading down toward the North Saskatchewan River valley.

The building on the lower right hand corner once served as the place to host the Legislative Assembly until the Alberta Legislature was completed.

The Alberta Legislature Grounds are located on Treaty 6 land, a traditional meeting ground for Indigenous peoples. Archaeological evidence suggests that this area along the North Saskatchewan River was an important meeting and seasonal dwelling place for Indigenous peoples dating back more than 10,000 years. It was a key river crossing and intersection point for major prairie trails.

The Hudson’s Bay Company and the North West Company built a series of forts along the North Saskatchewan River in the region starting in 1795. In 1802 Fort Edmonton moved to the Rossdale Flats, just east of the present-day Legislature. By 1830 age and damage from repeated flooding made a new building necessary. A new fort was constructed high on the bank of what is now the south Legislature Grounds. It remained on-site for 85 years. In the mid-19th century Fort Edmonton was the most important post on the prairies west of Fort Garry (Winnipeg).

Circular legend in the top left of the map contains the following text - Plan of Birmingham surveyed by Tho. Hanson, 1785. In the top right of the map, another legend - this one oblong, provides information on the demography of the town including details such as the town had 9,500 houses and 52,250 inhabitants. The map is a series of parallel lines running across one another identifying streets and roads. The bulk of this activity is in the centre of the map whilst the periphery is less detailed and chiefly consists of the outlines of fields. Blocks of grey appear at intervals indicating the use of land for commercial, industrial and agricultural purposes.

For anyone curious about yesterday, downtown had 2 nice little storms: one around 3PM, and another around 5:30PM. Blatchford recorded 1.8mm for the first one, but 0mm for the 2nd. So we currently sit at 0.7mm away from 2nd place.
