Reminds me of the days when one had to quickly appraise and pull a tax receipt together for a retiring prof who’s spatial Swedish cleaning resulted in a couple of banker boxes filled with maps - that were already in the collection

The #map must exist in a collection somewhere? Review of Chamber of Commerce's City of #Belleville map [1973/74] 3000 printed. "The best way to find your way around this city is to get a large ball of string or ask a local. Do not get a map." ACMLA Bulletin. No. 14 (1974) tinyurl.com/2fzv8kfz
BELLEVILLE, Ont. [Canadian Press] (CP)

The best way to find your way around this city is to get a large ball of string or ask a local. Do not get a map. The chamber of commerce has just published 3,000 new maps of the city.

However, the yacht club and mooring, facilities now are inland in the middle of an inter-section, the city's largest hotel has been suddenly moved cut of the city and other points of interest! some how hare been dislocated. The chamber explained the mix-up occurred when a key index on the nap was accidently rearranged.

If tourists decide to complain about the map, they had better phone. The map shows the chambers office four miles west of the city far from its downtown location.

Big Island was a favorite picnic site for Edmontonians before the First World War. A sternwheeler named the City of Edmonton and operated by John Walter was used for his lumber operations on weekdays and transported up to 400 people to Big Island for picnic and excursions on weekends and holidays.
Riverbend Slump - In the fall of 1999 this large piece of hillside slumped into the river, taking one house with it and endangering several others.
Fort Edmonton Park has created a working replica of a York boat which is moored in the river below the Fort. York boats were used to transport trade goods by the Hudson's Bay Company in the 1800s and replaced the voyageur canoes used earlier.
The mouth of Whitemud Creek marks the Whitemud Creek Nature Reserve, one of the major ravine systems that are part of our river valley. The area was named Whitemud by the early settlers because of the white mud, which lined both sides of the creek. The Cree who lived in the area called the creek "Flaming Spring" in memory of a battle between the Blackfoot and Cree.
Watch for Suckers spawning in Whitemud Creek in the spring
Watch for Whitefish spawning in the shallows downstream of the Quesnell Bridge in the fall.
On the south bank just above the Menzies (LRT) bridge where the sediment is exposed you can find a layer of volcanic ash left over from the violent eruption of Mount Mazama that created Crater Lake in Oregon about 6800 B.C.
Just above the Walterdale (105th St.) bridge on the south bank you will find the remains of John Walter's Ferry, as well as three of Edmonton's oldest buildings at the John Walter Museum Site.

Ian and I are 9 months into our AI mapping experiment. Pace of tech change has been staggering. So has shift in attitudes. Haters now use AI for their own work & find it useful. Those hiding behind fear, and using excuses as warnings is dwindling. They're usually ill-informed.

I see how AI can be an asset to an individual who makes a conscious choice to use it in order to enhance/accelerate their Cartographic/GIS workflows. Curious if those who have concerns over the environmental impact of AI would also be classed as ill-informed, excuse laden, and hiding behind fear?

ca. 1944 • Alberta Legislature Building

A stunning bird's-eye view looking north, of the Legislature & South Grounds. The 5th & final Fort Edmonton (1830~1915) stood just left of today's lawn bowling green and clubhouse - visible in the foreground.

The Alberta Legislature Building, which officially opened in 1912, was built directly adjacent to the site of the Fort Edmonton trading post. The surrounding grounds evolved into a massive public hub, accommodating formal gardens, active community sports grounds—like the classic lawn bowling greens visible in early landscape grids—and structural terraces cascading down toward the North Saskatchewan River valley.

The building on the lower right hand corner once served as the place to host the Legislative Assembly until the Alberta Legislature was completed.

The Alberta Legislature Grounds are located on Treaty 6 land, a traditional meeting ground for Indigenous peoples. Archaeological evidence suggests that this area along the North Saskatchewan River was an important meeting and seasonal dwelling place for Indigenous peoples dating back more than 10,000 years. It was a key river crossing and intersection point for major prairie trails.

The Hudson’s Bay Company and the North West Company built a series of forts along the North Saskatchewan River in the region starting in 1795. In 1802 Fort Edmonton moved to the Rossdale Flats, just east of the present-day Legislature. By 1830 age and damage from repeated flooding made a new building necessary. A new fort was constructed high on the bank of what is now the south Legislature Grounds. It remained on-site for 85 years. In the mid-19th century Fort Edmonton was the most important post on the prairies west of Fort Garry (Winnipeg).
