Talk about hydroclimate whiplash - Amarillo has had more rain in the last week than all of December 2025 - August 2026 combined. This will also be the city’s wettest September on record. Weekly totals are over 9” in parts of the panhandle, and it’s still raining.
West Texas mesonet showing weekly rainfall totals ranging from a few hundredths of an inch in central Texas to over 9” southwest of amarilllo.

there needs to be an emoji that is widely agreed upon to mean “clanker”, to describe people/code/etc that depend on LLMs to function. Something like 🤖 but more derogatory

Some lightning on tonight’s long run, which was more entertaining than the aggie’s radio call while we were getting demolished.
A distant thunderstorm cluster at night time, with lightning illuminating two separate updrafts. The picture is taken from a hill, with a field of wind turbines between me and the storm

everyone posting the new RadarScope update with the CarPlay support… I did it in 2021 via CarBridge (jailbreak tweak) on a screen that had backported CarPlay through the reversing camera input 😎 This worked better than you might expect, but still not great.

NSF is consolidating its geoscience research grants into a new program, GEOcore and reducing annual grants to $110 million total in 200-350 awards. Typical was about $300 million in 1,200 awards. Not including institutional grants ($1.3 billion/yr) and those may be gone. www.nsf.gov/funding/oppo...

well I was warned about this, and my side project my have some life left in it yet. but I for one will be sad to see the end of NOAAPort/SBN. www.weather.gov/media/notifi...
My feedback on the end of NOAAPort/SBN survey:

I am an atmospheric science graduate student and I'm currently planning a side project involving trying to downlink NOAAPort data, and hopefully, eventually post process the data into products for a personal web site.

I've acquired a 12 foot diameter reflector and I am currently designing a solution for mounting it in the limited available outdoor space that I have. I've also acquired a novra downconverter box (from ebay) and a software defined radio capable of digitizing its output. I have learned a lot along the way so far, about communications, radio, mechanical engineering, etc.

I'm fully aware that I could use the internet to download NOAA data and post-process it and achieve the result of having a website, but I wanted to do it "the old fashioned way" for educational purposes and I'd say that's been success so far.

I'm aware NOAAPort/SBN's primary objective is to be an operational product dissemination, and not an educational tool, and that I'm probably one of maybe a dozen interested parties. I was even aware that NOAAPort/SBN might be cancelled before I could complete my project. But I'll be sad to see it go.

3D printer peeps: I'm interested in getting a printer that can do multi-material, preferably something with multiple tool heads to avoid waste. I'm a bit confused about what a "prime tower" is and how it differs from "poops" that fire out a waste chute. I've seen demos of multi-head printers..(1/2)

Remember how power bricks used to be bigger, heavier, hotter, and less powerful than power modern power supplies? The SNES power supply can provide 8.5W and this much smaller GaN USB-PD can supply 65W, at greater efficiency. Well, the same thing is probably going to happen to grid transformers. 🧵

There has been a lot of finger-pointing in the weather community recently about NWS problems. The recent comms outage during severe wx spurred me to write about the issues the agency has - and the need to understand it's not just DOGE/OPM to "blame." balancedweather.substack.com/p/balancedwx...

I’d like to make it clear for all the people following me what the sheer gravity of the news is. Without this facility we can’t ensure constant communication with spacecraft beyond Earth orbit. If this facility is off-line, the Artemis program cannot send a crew to the Moon.

My review of the annual TTU "Awareness of AI training": its much more accurate on "what 'AI' is" than last year, but there's a lot of focus on "ask your AI to explain its reasoning for its decisions, and if it doesn't make sense to you, then take action" which is incredibly flawed.
