Your daily reminder that the US health care system is a scam. Over 90% of this lab bill was "adjusted" away without the health insurance company paying a cent, and then they won't even cover the re bymaining $21. And I'm on the best plan healthcare.gov offers, almost $1000/mo in premium.

"Best economy ever." For grifters and investors, maybe? We can tell which graphs POTUS looks at, and which graphs Americans feel the most.
Monthly job growth declining over the last 4.5 years. Most recent month shows -23k job growth.5 year graph, showing S&P 500 hitting new all-time highs.Cost of living has increased by 23% in 5 years. 5-year graph of Consumer Price Index (CPI) rising.

3) Am I using AI the "right way"? But there really is no right or wrong way. This isn't AI psychosis, it's loss of identity and connection with the work we (used to) do, the work has changed, and it may mean some don't enjoy doing it anymore. 2/2

SWE problems caused by AI I don't see talked about: 1) The sense of accomplishment is diminished. "AI wrote it" and thus I didn't. 2) No clear way to know if what I'm doing is "enough." Am I too slow? Or even too fast? No innate human limit on shipping. 1/2

It was easier then... landlines in my town only used 2 local exchanges, so they were all either 669-xxxx or 664-xxxx, and most were 9 as the 4 exchange was newer. Today I only know one phone number aside from my own, and those I still remember from childhood.

I cannot resist observing that the Trump crowd have launched major American military action to retaliate for Iranian military action that did not target Americans. There is no plausible claim of self-defense, and both houses of Congress have expressly disapproved military action.

The problem with American health care and the "cost of living" crisis in a screenshot. This is a $650/month "silver"-level ACA plan, which most Americans cannot afford to begin with. If anything goes wrong, or heaven forbid the missus gets pregnant, you are dipping into savings… you don't have.

It kinda got lost in the madness, but the federal conspiracy case against anti-ICE activists in Minnesota - the Minneapolis 15 - is a big deal It's not just the 1st Amendment abuse. It's part of their plan to crush dissent ahead of a stolen election My new column www.inquirer.com/opinion/ice-...

An outrageous federal conspiracy case against 15 anti-ICE protesters in Minnesota really seeks to silence all dissent.

24 years is a very long time to have accomplished as little in the Senate as John Cornyn did. He was always a loyal Republican soldier, a backbench Congressman with a nicer office and larger staff. Texas Republicans wanted financial scandal and moral depravity instead. By @sahilkapur.bsky.social

Cornyn didn't do Texas many favors, he wasn't loud nor MAGA enough for Texas. His loss is no surprise. It's a wild idea, but it would be nice to send impeached politicians to jail (or at least retirement) rather than to Washington.

To put it another way: if renewables were cheaper I think that's what they would be using. Renewables are already cheaper for a lot of use cases and is driving things automatically that way due to market forces, which is great. But base load remains a challenge.
000
JD @wuputah.com · 13/05/2026
Yes. Though I think if this leads to investing in nuclear that is "good" even if for the wrong reasons, renewables would be even better (and probably cheaper) but there is the base load i.e. "24x7" problem. I think we need still better, cheaper batteries to make renewables work for data centers.

This is quite something from Singapore's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vivian Balakrishnan, in an interview with Reuters. The end of the post-war order, diagnosed in technocratic language. www.mfa.gov.sg/newsroom/pre...
A screenshot with a block of text:

Minister: The US is now a revisionist power. For 80 years, the US was the underwriter for a system of globalisation based on UN Charter principles, multilateralism, territorial integrity, sovereign equality. It actually heralded an unprecedented and unique period of global prosperity and peace. Of course there were exceptions. And of course, the Cold War was still in effect for at least half of the last 80 years. But generally, for those of us who were non-communists, who ran open economies, who provided first world infrastructure, together with a hardworking disciplined people, we had unprecedented opportunities. The story of Singapore, with a per capita GDP of 500 US dollars in 1965.
Now, lit is| somewhere between 80,000 to 90,000 US dollars. It would not have happened if it had not been for this unprecedented period, basically Pax Americana and then turbocharged by the reform and opening of China for decades. It has been unprecedented. It has been great for many of us. In fact, I will say, for all of us, if you look back 80 years. But now, whether you like it or not, objectively, this period has ended. There is no point trying to assign blame or pejorative adjectives. That is not helpful. Basically, the underwriter of this world order has now become a revisionist power, and some people would even say a disruptor. But the larger point is that the erosion of norms, processes, and institutions that underpinned a remarkable period of peace and prosperity; that foundation has gone. What you are seeing now, whether you watch the war in Ukraine, in the Middle East or elsewhere, including in Asia, to me these are symptoms of the underlying tectonic rupture. Big powers and even lesser powers have a more narrow definition of national interest.
