There was a witch hiding in the trees of Hatwick Wood. They were a steward of the wood, caring for the alders, maples, and cedar within, watching over the home of the beasts and birds. The witch ensured that villagers never took more than they gave, that they were never ravenous in their consumption of the gifts they were given. This was the witch’s sacred duty, and their magic had flown wild and free as they upheld their oath.
The people who survived on the generosity of Hatwick Wood—every denizen from Farbreak at the south edge to Northpost on the opposite side—respected the witch. Although they had never seen the steward of the wood, stories about the witch had been passed down through the families. Everyone knew the witch was the forest caretaker, and if anything ever went wrong, they needed to be found to mend it. No one knew this better than the Ashtons.
Milo Ashton came from a long line of people who made their living in the forest. His grandfather, and his grandfather’s grandfather, and every generation before that were hunters. It wasn’t work that would make them rich, or elevate them above common folk, but it was good, honest work that would always be needed. The Ashtons had always hunted in Hatwick Wood, respected it, and in turn, the wood gave them a bounty.
That all changed when Hatwick Wood was cursed.

In the twenty years since the vampires rose up out of the earth, Corado hasn’t done too bad for himself. He’s still alive, for one, and he’s got a lucrative trade as a nightrunner smuggling people beneath the vampiric horde that blots out the sky each night. It's dangerous work, but enough to get a roof over his head and a bottle in his hand at the end of the day. That’s pretty good for life under the vampires.

Then an attack from the horde leaves him stuck in the desert, alone with a newly-orphaned boy, and his luck finally dries up. He resolves to find what remains of the boy’s family and put it all behind him—but instead of taking him off Corado’s hands, his so-called “family” offers a new deal: escort them to the vampiric capital in exchange for a veritable fortune.

Corado knows he shouldn’t. It’s a long, dangerous route, and the group has a smack of sedition to them that he knows firsthand to be a quick way to a bloody death.

It is a hell of a lot of money, though.
