Things are quite spread out in Texas. My wife only works in person one day a week and has a 100 mile commute. A few times we’ve needed to travel to visit family that same day after work. That’s about 300 miles. Agreed there are diminishing returns for 300+ mi. But hybrid work + long commutes exist

My father used to do land development in & around Houston. A significant portion of that development is just downstream of land availability, ease of permitting, and familiarity (especially after lot development). So these sort of emergent trends are accidentally self reinforcing.

I discovered a true work of art on Threads. It reads like something from the Colbert Report.
Screenshot of a Threads conversation. The original post reads “EV + starlink is the perfect recipe for work from anywhere.”
The incredible reply by “mp3_in_” makes a claim about fertility and radiation from 5G and vaccines, ending with a skull-and-crossbones emoji.

This is a small anecdote, but my neighbors are skirting the HOA rules for signage by putting Talerico stickers in their car windows. The best way that I can describe the feeling is restrained optimism, which makes sense after Beto.

Unfortunately related from a few years ago, during a visit with extended family. My mom was an early QAnon nut. While watching fox, she blurts out “I don’t support interracial marriage.” I heard this and responded from the adjacent room, gesturing at me + my wife: “Uh what.” “Thats’s different”.

Yes. If production bottlenecks work upstream and start decreasing shale oil production, that will put upward pressure on natural gas prices.

Apparently my elementary school district (in Florida) has had free breakfast for over 25 years. Feeding children is good. Who knew? This should be available nationwide. web.archive.org/web/20260413...

Trying to steel man this: The posturing is a balance between maximing strategic value of the weapons vs minimizing overreaction from other nuclear powers. This is important for the US b/c of forward deployment esp. vs. USSR. You don’t want someone mistaking a satellite launch with a nuclear icbm

Coming from a white man that’s actually a UT Austin grad, Bo French can go eat a bag of dicks. Texas is a microcosm of America. You don’t even have to like football. Just go tailgating and you’ll see the best side of America. And sometimes someone riding a cow in the street.

I have a mostly WFH job that involves occasional visits to manufacturing sites (and rarely an office). Being an operator is rough. Physical fitness can also be very difficult to maintain in physically demanding jobs, especially in remote areas. Eating like shit will catch up with you.

Don’t underestimate how many fundamental technologies we use today are from ~1880. Engines, Maxwell equations (wireless digital communications), telephone, electric motors, pneumatic tires, dishwashers, the electric iron, the modern bicycle, and so on.

These things breed faster than you can shoot them. Traps are the only way to keep populations under control. If guys shooting them from helicopters has been insufficient, we should quit before we lose our own emu war.

I forget who was making this point but you can absolutely see it with respect to relationship dynamics. Most of the left’s political leadership are in stable monogamous relationships. Less so on the right, especially with current and former members of this administration.

We rent (cheaper in Austin) but I did do the math. A hybrid made more sense, despite my preferences. I likely will replicate that combo of solar, bat, + EV. W/o EV credits, that’s also the order we’ll be getting them. Note: A hybrid SUV gets the ~same fuel economy as my tiny sedan from college.

Hard to overstate how much cheaper gas is here. Most EVs are going to have the same capacity as an entire home battery systems so ideally you’d charge during the day. That’s easier if you WFH but then there’s less savings due to less driving.

The problems in the world after something like this happens, followed by Iran attacking the desalination plants in the region is hard to think about. Surely it makes the current oil, gas, etc. disruptions look quaint.

That’s going to be a much bigger deal in CA than TX. Households simply consume a much smaller promotion of electricity in TX. I am curious as to what the data looks like for that. I recall that when subsidies were in place the payback time was 2-3 years longer in TX than CA or MA b/c of lower rates

Texas was producing over 30GW of power from solar today for 8 hours today. Solar alone is approaching the size of California’s entire grid. Something like half of our emissions are from coal plants. Nat gas peaker plants aren’t as bad but not great. Solar and batteries are making dents in both.
Combined wind and solar generation for 2026-08-03. Solar peaked at over 34GW this morning. Wind + solar stayed over 40GW all day.
Combined power generation chart. Nuclear stats steady at 5GW. Batteries charge during the morning. Solar picks up during the daytime. Solar and wind are starting to cause coal to go offline during the day. Natural gas drops during the daytime. And the natural gas peak for the evening is lessened due to 10GW of batteries coming online for about 2 hours in the evening. Batteries charge heavily during the day (peaking at 9GW) and discharge for the evening demand spike, peaking at over 10GW this evening. Estimated wholesale prices for 2026-08-04. These are very low prices despite significant AC use and load growth.

A year ago >100 died due to a lack of flood sirens in Kerr County, TX. Nearby counties made the upgrades. When Kerr got $10m during Covid, constituents wanted to return it to the “communist” Biden admin. Instead, local officials spent it on new radios for the cops. www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/t...
