Yes! I sent emails during my kid’s nap today. Following that site’s guidance, I did my city council rep, state senator and rep, county commissioner, and Met Council rep + Met Council chair. (It was my own email, though, not an edit to the site’s.)

We subsidize private car ownership *so much*, in so many different ways We should subsidize the service that acts as a safety net for households to own fewer cars, too—&, right now, come thru w emergency $ (Want to talk about affordability? Hard to save more in one fell swoop than dropping a car!)

Something I’ve learned in conversations in the last week is that Evie (HourCar, the car share service set to shut down in the Twin Cities w/o emergency $) gives ppl confidence to try going car-free—then they realize they can Why this matters: *Even when Evie isn’t being used* it helps climate goals

I do think that a lot of prescriptive or, like, One Big Idea nonfiction feels v padded to me, where I understand why it’s a book in terms of the ecology & economy of ideas but, as a reader, would’ve preferred one or 3 articles. But immersive books that engage w a tangle of ideas have no replacement

This bums me out so much. “Environmental reportage with personal elements” is exactly what I want to read, & overly pat prescriptivism can honestly wreck it And IMO a book like that can have a longer life if forced prescriptivism doesn‘t date it. I still teach Elizabeth Rush’s RISING every year
“Over and over, she has been told her book—which she describes as environmental reportage with personal elements—won’t sell in the current market. One agent thinks they can sell it but only if the writer turns up its prescriptive takeaways.”

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

Also strikes me that the fact that we haven't necessarily thought about taxes in these terms enough might reflect that data condition us to take geographic units for granted. But, like, part of the entire point of our weird geographic structures is to enable precisely this segregation & extraction

Ward 8 News from Council Member Soren Stevenson
October 8th, 2026

Dear neighbors,

The City Council is preparing to amend and adopt a City Budget for 2027. The 2027 Budget proposed by Mayor Frey in August includes cuts to many programs that our communities rely on while increasing the budget for the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) by more than $20 million.

We can recognize that the City is facing real fiscal challenges while rejecting false austerity. These narratives are being used as a pretext for cuts to programs communities rely on, all while allowing MPD to have an ever ballooning budget that goes unchecked year after year.

Fiscal responsibility doesn’t look like just cutting across the board. It means examining every major area of city spending, identifying inefficiencies and measurable outcomes, and ensuring every tax dollar the City spends actually improves residents’ lives or enhances a public good.

MPD has gone $20 million over budget two years in a row, and MPD leaders have publicly admitted that there has been mismanagement of overtime. Earlier this year, both the Commissioner of Community Safety and the Chief Operating Officer both publicly stated they were unaware of this overspending for nearly all of 2025. Earlier this year, when ICE invaded our city, our communities stepped up to protect our neighbors while the MPD did little to nothing to keep us safe yet still got millions in overtime compensation. It is not fiscally responsible to increase MPD’s budget by $20 million when it is widely known that mismanagement of MPD is fueling unnecessary costs that are not meaningfully improving public safety.

The budget is funded by working people, and they deserve accountability and oversight of how their money is spent. This year, the Board of Estimate and Taxation, the body that sets the maximum tax levy, made it clear that unchecked police overspending needed to be meaningfully addressed. The City Council has…

and then it’s just a photo of an innocent little mouse watching a movie on the big screen, the way scorsese intended.

I had never thought about how insurance for frats works, so I had to stare into space for a while when I read this: sorayachemaly.substack.com/p/33-underst...
Assault and sexual assault are so prevalent in the Greek system that insurers won’t insure fraternities. They are considered a high-risk class because of decades of litigation costs related to sexual assault claims, the second most common claim type for frats (assault and battery is the first). When frats do get coverage policies typically exclude crimes, explicitly citing sexual misconduct. Alcohol-related violations are also commonly excluded.

Because of this profile, fraternities have to self-insure, collectively funding through an entity like the Fraternity Risk Management Trust, an instrument members pay into. The amazing thing about this setup is that in the case of criminal findings, excluded from coverage, financial risks flow to individual men’s families’ homeowners insurance policies, not upstream to local fraternities or their national organizations.

I suspect this especially influences going from two kids to three. People satisfy themselves with fewer than they would’ve if we expected less of ourselves with each one. (Being older when childbearing starts definitely also matters there, of course.)

One reason schools are always hotbeds is that kids are a more immunologically naive population than adults w respect to almost every infectious disease. But not a brand-new one! I suspect that if we'd really put $ into school HVAC + high-quality staff PPE + closures elsewhere, pretty safe actually
