Y'all. I know you're tired of my running on about this, and I *want* to give you a break over the weekend, but I CAN'T fail these cats. They need a HOME. They're affectionate, relaxed and in decent health, and their issues are MINOR and EASILY MANAGEABLE. All we need is to find That Person.

UPDATE: Yes, their owner passed away Thursday. We're taking them in today, but as I said, that CAN'T be permanent; they NEED a HOME NOW. We're willing to drive pretty much anywhere in the Northeast for the right adopter. We're begging.

FRIENDS IN THE NYC AREA: Okay, this is a tough one, but please bear with me. My wife's lifelong friend has stage 4 pancreatic cancer and is desperately seeking a home for his two cats when that time comes. The elder, Wally, is something like 13 years old and DELIGHTFULLY dim. The younger, Doris,

The way that colors intersect with material economics as much as taste is always fascinating. Was reminded while reading last night why did British troops wear red in the 1700s? Because red dye was cheapest.

Iran was tremendously resilient in the Iran-Iraq War, but this misses the mark. Iraq’s offensive against Al-Faw, demonstrating Iraqi conventional superiority, and Operation Praying Mantis, the U.S. action against Iran’s navy, were in April 1988. Iran accepted a ceasefire less than four months later.

YES! When I gave a lecture on US military power and command of the commands, I told my students I was about to show them a photo encapsulating US military dominance, and asked them to guess what it was. No one ever correctly guessed “unloading a mobile Burger King from a C-17.”

If you don’t have much disposable income don’t give to this but I know a lot of y’all do and it’s worth some coins IMO. Direct action of a very specific kind.

When he spoke around the world, Mazen al-Hamada’s face told the story of brutal torture by Assad’s regime. Assad falling is no guarantee of a better Syria replacing him, but his continued rule is a guarantee that a better Syria couldn’t Now that barrier is gone and I hope against hope that Syrians - the ones whose country it is - finally get to live free

I still have the letter I sent my Congressman in 2013 supporting action against Assad. To paraphrase a friend, the Syrian Civil War shaped my worldview and there are few things I wanted to happen in world affairs more than to see the regime fall. I hope what comes next is better.

I saw a photo in 2012 or 2013, three girls on a swing in liberated Aleppo, smiling, laughing, happy, and it’s stuck in my mind ever since. I hope they survived the horrors of Assad, and can, with all Syrians, build a future of freedom, justice, and dignity in a new free Syria.
