When we talk about the costs that LLMs impose on society we should not forget the fact that nothing works anymore because everyone is so scared of getting their shit scraped. I can't even use google scholar from my university or starlink because they send too much traffic.

This is really worrying: the PISA scores on high school student performance are in. Notice the steep decline across disciplines between 2018 and 2025. In the Netherlands, 40% of 15-year olds apparently can't read well enough to function in society. 40%! (Source: nos.nl/l/2630148)

We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.

Reminder: the hallucinations AI makes are not design flaws, they’re fundamental to how LLMs work, and as the LLMs improve, hallucinations will simply continue. This is known about them. But the common sense assumption that hallucinations are errors that will be fixed is definitely going around
