😬 I may know some of the individuals involved... We should form a committee to bring them to justice. (Which will likely involve no belly-rubs for an extended period of time.)

In a flash of autonomy I just reached the conclusion that I'm not going to practice free seating anymore. I'm too old to play musical chairs in the office.

Programming is both a means of learning & discovery & a medium for communication. It's inevitably at odds with itself--we're trying to both saying things clearly & concisely & at the same time learning new concepts that we can't possibly express clearly & concisely because we just learned them.

Discworld QOTD, from Feet of Clay
Royalty was like dandelions. No matter how many heads you chopped off, the roots were still there underground, waiting to spring up again.

It seemed to be a chronic disease. It was as if even the most intelligent person had this little blank spot in their heads where someone had written: "Kings. What a good idea." Whoever had created humanity had left in a major design flaw. It was its tendency to bend at the knees.

Service Provider: Just hit "Advanced". You can then access the site and log in. Me: 😳😂😂🤣 No! 😒 (idiots!)

The artisanal metaphor was probably better in many ways. Many of our styles, techniques, patterns and practices are far more like artistic schools than engineering.

Wondering how to get started with #DomainDrivenDesign? A simple first step: when your stakeholders share user stories or business rules, ask them for a concrete example. Dig into the details—think about a specific persona, a customer’s name, or exact figures. Avoid abstract descriptions. 1/3

I got lucky with my first novel. That luck has echoed through the rest of my career. If that first novel had been released a year earlier or later, who's to say what would have happened. Some folks get annoyed when I mention how much luck has played into my success. But I know the truth.

Oh, absolutely. We do have the equivalent of 'Miss' (Mejuffrouw), but it's considered very quaint and outdated, as far as I can tell. I don't think there's a 'Ms'. And everyone here speaks English, but don't expect nuance and accuracy... 🤷

I'd like that! I do think there's a coupling, but not necessarily a preset path. Introducing a new tech practice, pairing or tdd, might need enough slack for the team, and some level of trust. But if I need to start working in smaller steps, I might need those tech practices to be successful.

Certainly in Dutch culture, we have a tendency to not use titles. It's very quickly seen as somewhat snobby to insist. Irregardless of gender, of course. Which also means we might come across as too familiar, using first name, or both first and last, in the opening of an e-mail.

Thanks! I could've used that nice name 200 pages ago :-) There's also the quote about not being able to get out of trouble using the same thinking that got you into it. It's been a theme in my work that technological and organisational change needs to happen in lockstep. I can't see another way.

Sometimes the legacy is because you don't make the change. Sometimes the legacy is because you _do_ make the change, but not in the way or in the place it should be made, because that is out of reach. And then you have the same thing twice, but slightly different...

Wouter Lagerweij @wouterla.bsky.social · 21/01/2024
Whether it's difficult to change because you can't make the change yourself (outsourced, or simply owned by others in the company), or because it's hard to even know what the side effects of the change will be and you are afraid to try it, you will end up with legacy.

I ended up with: "Legacy is all the attributes of a system, including the organization building the system, that prevents us from delivering at the pace and quality needed and expected by the market." And then spent 2 chapters trying to explain that :-)

Thanks for the link @markdalgarno.bsky.social! I struggled with the definition of 'legacy' while writing my book-in-progress, "The Product Owner's Guide To Escaping Legacy". I needed a way to ensure it was a shared responsibility, and 'code not under test' was not sufficient.

Of course, I'm someone that prefers to send longer messages from a device with a physical keyboard. I guess that means I'm not the best person to ask ;-)

Wouter Lagerweij @wouterla.bsky.social · 13/11/2023
My car / phone can easily read me messages I receive. And you shouldn't be sending chat messages, text or audio, while driving. If it's important, stop and send a message. If it's not important, make sure you don't make the receiving party do extra work for a message that is not important!

Wouter Lagerweij @wouterla.bsky.social · 13/11/2023
I tend to not listen to those. I can't immediately, usually, and then I forget. In most cases, I do think sending an audio message is being very inconsiderate of the receiver's time and effort.
