Towards the end of my Burmese class today, we were interrupted by loudspeakers in the background: the military announcing that this month 8 young people from that particular ward would be conscripted. And I was reminded how, for those in Myanmar, this nightmare just goes on and on.

It has been great exploring Lukang with the writer Niu Er the Pig Butcher (殺豬的牛二 ... how's that for a pen name?). And this gem of temple art, as Spongebob takes his first tentative steps into the Taiwanese pantheon, is a thing of joy.

In Pingtung city, our neighbours come over with big shopping bags full of gin. They share it with us. And then, as they stagger to the door, they insist on leaving it on our drinks cabinet for next time. The added benefit of this is that it also "keeps it out of the way of the kids." I approve.

Our local pharmacist here in Pingtung has a sidekick called Haru. Haru is a dog who wears a blue cravat, and who stands with a sorrowful look on his face while the patient lists their symptoms. Then, while the pharmacist goes to cook up potions, Haru sidles over to sniff the patient reassuringly.
