a baby fly agaric bursting into life #fungi #autumn #toadstool
A young fly agaric emerging from the woodland floor.

From Wikipedia -

Fly agaric fruiting bodies emerge from the soil looking like white eggs. After emerging from the ground, the cap has an irregular distribution of small white to yellow pyramid-shaped warts. These are remnants of the universal veil, a membrane that encloses the entire mushroom when it is still very young. Dissecting the mushroom at this stage reveals a characteristic yellowish layer of skin under the veil, which helps identification. As the fungus grows, the red colour appears through the broken veil and the warts become less prominent; they do not change in size, but are reduced relative to the expanding skin area. The cap changes from globose to hemispherical and finally to plate-like in mature specimens. The bright red cap ranges from 5–30 centimetres (2–12 inches) in diameter. Age and rain may cause the red colour to fade and the warts to fall off.

Good Morning & Happy Friday Everyone! Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Mouthful; any bird with anything in its beak Alt. is #Black; any bird with black plumage - A Rook delicately holding an acorn #birds #ECK #birdphotography #naturephotography #ForestFriday #Flyday

The bird is a large, stocky corvid; it has a long, slender, pointed beak and its plumage is all black. The shoulder and underparts have a purple-violet sheen from the bright sunshine.
The Rook is on a small, thin branch with clumps of thick lichen growing along it. It is extended towards the camera towards the right side of the shot. Five larger branches are in the background; all vertical, bare and covered in lichen, against a clear blue sky

A tern at RSPB Dungeness, truly embodying today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme, #Mouthful #birds #birdphotography #birdwatching #wildlifephotography #nature
Common tern standing on a small island in a quarry lake with a fish in their beak.

From The Wildlife Trusts -

The common tern is a medium-sized tern and the one you are most likely to see inland, as well as at the coast. Common terns breed on shingle beaches, rocky islands and inland on the gravelly shores of lakes and rivers. They are noisy in their colonies and, like most terns, will attack intruders threatening their nests. They hover over the water before plunge-diving to catch their fish prey.

How to identify
Common terns and Arctic terns can be very difficult to tell apart. The common tern is whiter below, has shorter tail streamers, and has a longer bill, which is orangey-red with a black tip. It is silvery-grey above, with a black cap and short, red legs.Common term balancing on one leg, trying to swallow a fish.

Perfect timing for #BirdOfTheDay alt theme #KingfisherQuest, as I captured my very first kingfisher photo (in the UK) last weekend! They truly are little sparkly flying gems. Beautiful. #birding #birds #kingfisher #britishwildlife #photography
A kingfisher perched on a slim branch, partially obscured by leaves. Facing to the right, head in profile.

From The Wildlife Trusts -

The striking mix of its bright-blue back and orange breast make the kingfisher unmistakable. Males have an entirely black bill, females have an orangey-red patch at the base.

The kingfisher is a colourful bird of rivers and streams. It's often heard before it's seen, giving a high-pitched piping call as it flies. It can sometimes be spotted sitting quietly on low-hanging branches over the water, tilting its head as it searches for prey. When it spots a small fish, it dives into the water to catch it, bringing its prize back to its perch to eat. It often bashes the fish against the branch a few times before swallowing it. Kingfishers nest in burrows that they dig into river banks. The burrow can be over a metre long!

The wheatear has a characteristic tail pattern: a black 'T' on a white rump, which can be seen when it is in flight. Males are smart-looking birds, with blue-grey backs and heads, black wings, black cheeks with white eyestripes, and pale orange chests. Females are browner and juveniles speckled.

They nest in holes in trees, old buildings and abandoned crows' nests, laying between four and five eggs. When they hatch, both parents help to feed the young chicks.

Kestrels are typically seen hovering, their pointed wings held out. Males have a grey head and tail with a prominent black band, a gingery-brown back and a creamy underside which is speckled with black. Females are similar, but with a more uniform brown back and dark bands on the tail.

From The Wildlife Trusts -

The greylag goose is a large, pale grey goose with pink legs and an orange bill.

Our commonest native goose, the greylag goose can be very territorial while nesting, chasing other geese and large birds away from its nesting site. Greylag geese become sociable again once the chicks have hatched, with several families of goslings sometimes grouping together. Greylag geese have short bills and prefer to graze pasture and meadows where cattle or sheep are grazing. They will also take grain, root crops and leafy vegetation.

A male reed bunting perched on twigs. His feathers are puffed out and fluffy, making him look rounder than usual. The background is blurry, vibrant green.

In winter the head is mostly brown, though the white collar and 'moustache' are still obvious. The throat becomes pale, though there are usually traces of the dark bib still visible.

Female buntings, including female yellowhammers and reed buntings, can be very difficult to tell apart. Female reed buntings have a pale throat and 'moustache', separated by a dark streak that reaches the base of the beak. They lack the yellowish hues of a female yellowhammer.
