Got Other Worlds: The Art of Alex Ries in the post today, and not only is this a very heavy and stiff blunt weapon with which to KO a burglar in self-defence if needs be, AND an exercise weight, but it turns out it's also a pretty lit sci-fi book detailing speculative evolution on other planets.
Pic of the cover of the chongus absolute unit of a book. A giant stone grey fairy angel alien with a light for a face and a light in the chest like Princess Peach's broach is sat cross-legged in peach and grey clouds looking down at two beings on a peach and grey beach. The beings have the centaur body plan and pointy Jar Jar Binks-coded but without the ears(?) faces. Though you can't see the front of their faces here but I know how they look from promotional materials and from the back of the book.

The book is about 40cm × 40cm and 5cm deep and very heavy - must be pretty fancy paper!

There’s always going to be someone better, faster, and more skilled than I. But no one is going to have the same artistic voice as mine. Creating isn’t a competition, it’s a form of communication and connection. It’s a vulnerable thing, but it’s beautiful that way.

the brand safety panopticon has come to twitch
Streamers, wary of both AI and YouTube’s infuriatingly un-transparent hall of mirrors, are not enthused about this new development.

“Ohhh so that’s why ad revenue dropped,” longtime streamer JP "itmeJP" McDaniel said on Twitter.

“I’m genuinely worried that the sheer fact that I’m a lesbian will cause the AI to remove ads,” said Vtuber LuminusRed. “In the past I’ve tested it and confirmed that I get less ad money if I had queer-related tags on my stream like ‘lesbian,’ so I am worried this dumb AI monitoring will mean I no longer get money from ads on Twitch.”

I am perpetually crashing out about work and/or school because of this. I have found this tumblr post a useful encapsulation of Living in These Times:
A tumblr post by nitewrighter that reads:

“Me: I don't get it. I thought was doing a lot better than was a few years ago. I'm like 10 times more on top of things than I used to be. How does everything feel terrible now?

The Tiny Me in OSHA-approved Hi-Vis Gear Who lives in my brain and pulls all the levers: Boss, it's the fascism. You're completely gunked up with cortisol due to the fact that your entire daily life is now underscored with a haunting awareness of the rapid erosion of your rights, dignity, and any and all social safety nets, and you're also bearing witness to the most vulnerable people immediately being persecuted. This creates a natural stress response that basically means you're going to continue having memory and organizational problems, as well as emotional imbalances.

Me: BUT I HAVE A BULLET JOURNAL AND I MEDITATE NOW.

Since January I've worked non stop on personal projects. Two comics, two zines. It is netting me almost zero money as I have nothing to actively sell. But I want to be part of a world where artists can make things again and make a living from it. I have to try.
It is terrifying and has given me literal health issues due to stress and burn out. I can not take a sick leave. I have next to no security. I am sacrificing a lot to do this. And I don't want it to seem romantic and great. It isn't. It's thankless. Utterly thankless.
But it's what I want to do. It's what I've wanted to do since I was 4 years old. And so I am asking. Borderline begging. If you enjoy what I do, supporting me on Patreon because you believe in me, my stories and my art - it helps. I need so many more patrons than I have today to make it work.
And it seems hopeless. But I am baring my heart here. I do not believe in predatory systems where artists have to run like big corpo and share their PSDs or make merch or have video calls. I want a world where artists make their craft and that is enough. So if you sign up, what you can expect is:
A lot of sketches. A _lot_ of them. Some exclusive posts (because they're either WIPs of comics or they are NSFW in which case I have to lock them by Patreon rules). That's it. Nothing fancy.
If you read this far, thank you and here is my link:
