All was quiet in Dawn's Respite. Eerily so. The Scions were laid in the beds spread across the room as if they were sleeping, but such was not the case. Their bodies were here, but their souls were missing. Jaeger's was the only soul in the room as he kneeled beside Alisaie's side, deep in thought. He cradled her limp hand gently in his own; hands that nearly dwarfed hers entirely. Where did she go? Where did they all go? He worried for them all of course, but Alisaie's summoning had hit him the hardest. They were supposed to stay together. She'd made him promise not to leave, and yet she was the one who ended up collapsing on the battlefield.

"So please... Don't you dare leave me alone." Her words echoed in his mind again, wrapping around his heart and squeezing until he thought it would burst. The realization had hit him like a rampaging auroch. How could he have not seen it before? They had become thick as thieves since reuniting after the Dragonsong War, that much was plain for all to see. He considered her his best friend. But when had it turned to love? For how long? Weeks? Months? The lingering glances, the desire to be in her presence, to touch her, to make her happy... Those weren't the desires of a platonic relationship...right? Oh gods. What the hells does one do when they fall in love with their best friend? He grimaced. Nothing. He would do nothing. Love was not something he deserved. And it was impressed upon him long ago that he was impossible to love. No, he would not ruin their friendship for his own selfish desires. He would continue as he always had, even if it hurt.

He forced his mind to move on. Thoughts of their last moments together on the battlefield. How they'd reached for each other, their bodies wracked with pain. His stomach twisted. Could he have prevented her from being summoned away had he only grasped her hand? Surely not. But the thought lingered regardless. A low rumble vibrated in Jaeger's throat. He thought of the mysterious voice that took his friends from him. The robed man from his last contact. It was his fault. When he got his hands on him....

"Jaaaaeeegerrrr! Are you in here?" Tataru's voice rang out in the silent room just as she rounded the curtains, causing Jaeger to jump. He released Alisaie's hand as if it were a viper that had struck him, hoping Tataru hadn't seen. That was the last thing he needed.

"T-Tataru!" he stuttered, his voice pitching upward in surprise. The Lalafellin woman looked at him in confusion, then understanding, and then...pity. Gods, he hated that look. He cleared his throat as he stood. "Tataru," he started again. "Is it time?"

Tataru beamed at him, bouncing excitedly on her toes. "Yes! I'm all ready to go now. The boat is already waiting for us." She glanced around the room at their friends one last time before beckoning to him. "Let's go find that beacon!"

Jaeger relaxes on a bench in front of the Leveilleur estate. A tome on the history of Old Sharlayan is cracked open in his hand. As much as he is trying to stay awake, history isn't the most thrilling subject to him. The afternoon sun is warm and he is a cat after all.....

Before Jaeger can nod off again, he feels a vibration through the bench as his girlfriend, Alisaie, slides in beside him, hooking her arm through his.

"What are you reading?"

Jaeger smiles at her brightly, awake now. "I just picked up a few tomes on the history of Old Sharlayan. I realized a while ago that my knowledge of this city and the surrounding isles is...lacking. I thought it might be a good time to remedy that while you were at lunch with your friend. Did that go well?"

Alisaie tilts her head slightly, curious as to his sudden interest in Sharlayan history. "It was nice to catch up after so long, so I'd say it went well, yes," she starts. "But whatever has you so interested in this particular subject?"

Jaeger grins sheepishly. "Well....it's your home. It's important to you, so it's important to me." Jaeger pauses before adding, "And it wouldn't hurt to improve your father's image of me. But uh...don't tell him that."

Alisaie rolls her eyes but smiles, pulling his arm closer to her chest. "You don't have to do that, you know. I will love you regardless of what he thinks."

The Hrothgar chuckles. "Oh, I know. But it'll make things easier when I become part of the family. I already told you I'm marrying you one day, if you recall," he smirks.

Alisaie's cheeks pink slightly before returning his smirk. "Yes, yes, I recall, you goobue. Don't think I'll forget."

Lakeland was truly beautiful, even when it was under the haunting everlasting light.

But now it was experiencing the first sip of moonlight in one hundred years. Colors that hadn't been seen before washed across the forest, only barely visible by the glow of the Crystal Tower.

Alisaie had forgotten it had a light of its own to cast, so easily outshone by the remains of a calamity.

She had been here for a year. Long enough to get used to the depressing forever daylight.

Ahzuvi had only lasted a handful of days before she ripped the night from its gaol beyond the sky—she had gone stir crazy at the lack of a night cycle in that time, but Alisaie had a hard time blaming her.

There have been two nights, but only now have they come to Fort Jobb to gaze at the stars.

The first night was entirely consumed by the pathetically comedic reveal of each other's feelings.

Alisaie had leaned against the warrior of light before, many times—Ahzuvi was comfortable with such close causal touch and affection, but really only with her and her brother.

Things were so obvious, between all of them. Ahzuvi hadn't been (entirely) unobservant of her own feelings—she just feared the outcome if the topic ever came up, things would change irreparably.

The great warrior of light truly spent all these years not fully aware of the mutual affections, even as they quite literally flicked her in the face.

Honestly, it made sense why Thancred and Y'shtola had made a bet on who blurted out their feelings first. Alisaie made a mental note to collect a share of coin from Y'shtola for her lack of confidence—it was a hefty sum after so many years. But to Alisaie's immeasurable annoyance, she wouldn't have won that bet unless she was objectively correct.

She just hated that Y'shtola read her and her brother like a book. And she had to give some credit—Y'shtola had assumed Alphinaud would be the first to break that topic open.

Though Ahzuvi's attention was focused on a journal in her lap, she did occasionally tilt her head to nudge Alisaie's at her shoulder. Simple, comforting reminders that they were together again.

Ahzuvi was quietly marking away in her journal, making notes and recording observations of the night sky. On the other page, a vivid depiction of stars preserved in colored wax.

Alisaie hadn't seen her draw that one, and realized it had to have been done before the Lightwarden's defeat.

"Is that Eorzea's sky?"

The warrior of light paused, her quill tapping.

"In a way...it's what I remember, at least."

"Your memory is beautiful." Gods it felt good to finally not have to stifle her impulsive desires—years of holding back intrusive thoughts almost gave the game away many times. Alisaie tilted her head, trying to make sense of the red star in the corner. Ahzuvi certainly remembered Dalamud, but she didn't seem the sort to preserve it so... gracefully.

Her curiosity got the better of her, especially as Eorzea's night skies had essentially faded from her own memory.

"Dalamud? No," the way she laughed had always been gentle, but now it came with a warmth and adoration that almost stole Alisaie's breath away. "Dragonstar. I miss being able to see it."

Alisaie's brows knitted together. "You've pointed it out to me before, but I never noticed it was so...red." The irony of it being Dalamud-red was not lost on her, and she assumed it was what Alphinaud would surely call a 'stylistic choice'.

Ahzuvi was quiet for a time, clearly trying to find the words she wanted to say.

"It's... complicated. You know the Ishgardian tales about the star burning bright at the roar of a great wyrm?"

Alisaie hums affirmation.

"That's not entirely correct, but also not...wrong? You might be able to see it with an aetherometer, actually." Her quill accents her words, pointing at the colorful lines and swirls on the page. "It disturbs the aether in the heavens in response to dragonsong. And dragons are quite often singing. Sometimes its soft, ripples like heavy water. Sometimes it's sharp, like the crack of an old tree falling. And it isn't always colors... but it feels like colors."

Alisaie had gotten used to Ahzuvi's attempts at describing her perception of aether, and Ahzuvi had gotten better at describing it. Somewhat. Still, they both agreed that a view through an aetherometer would be one of the first things they do upon returning home.

There was an awkward silence after that, however. Neither wanted to address the current situation of how to get the Scions home, but it was heavy on their minds. Alisaie was very aware how hard Ahzuvi was trying not to think about the topic, and speak as if nothing was wrong. As if returning to the Source was something they could all do at any time.

But she knew that the warrior of light was missing home. Her adventure's spirit that had flourished in Eorzea's beauty and mysteries, yearning to return.

"You know you can go back if you need anything, right?"

"I'm not leaving."

It was abrupt and forceful, enough that Alisaie had to squeeze her arm to remind her.

Remind her she was in the present, at her side, no longer a world and a year away.

Ahzuvi relaxed a moment later. "Forgive me."

"There is nothing to forgive. I understand. We all understand."

For all of her strength, the Scions knew how deeply she cared for them. How far she would go to save them, how much she would sacrifice just to see them.

But Alisaie couldn't help but notice a different emotion under Ahzuvi's behavior since arriving. A flicker of something she didn't want anyone to know, but couldn't fully hide.

Something happened after the Exarch called her to the first, leaving the warrior of light alone in the middle of a war field. She was certain something terrible happened, and Ahzuvi was not willing to speak on it.

Alisaie had already seen how deeply Ahzuvi could hide a memory she wanted erased from the world. And she had acted exactly like this.

"I am not leaving you again."

Jaeger POV:

A month. That’s how long it had been since the Scions of the Seventh Dawn had “disbanded” and gone their separate ways. Since he’d seen her face. Old Sharlayan was quiet now, late into the night as it was. Jaeger was reclined atop one of the white, solid stone railings lining one of the pathways leading down to Scholar’s Harbor, overlooking the ocean. The moon was full and bright tonight, and he couldn’t help his drifting thoughts as he gazed upon it. He had heard nothing from Alisaie since she and Alphinaud had gone to Garlemald to help the nation rebuild. No linkpearl call, not even a letter. But he had felt the distance between them even before she was physically gone. Something in their relationship had shifted. He couldn’t put his finger on when or why, only that it was after their return from Ultima Thule. They had all returned to the Rising Stones shortly afterwards while he was recovering from near death at the hands of Zenos, feeling the peace and quiet of “home” would be better for them all. Jaeger had been forced to remain on bedrest for weeks, much to his dismay. The first few days, Alisaie would visit him every day. And then it became every few days, and for much shorter periods. She seemed…quieter. As if her mind were elsewhere. Any time he asked about it, she would always say everything was fine. Had he done something to upset her? Was she only visiting him out of pity? The thought made him sick with anxiety. But then again, anxiety seemed his constant companion these days. He missed her. He hated her absence. He especially hated where she had gone. Visiting was always an option, but the Garleans hated him. This didn’t bother him, for the feeling was mutual; however, he didn’t want to make things harder for the twins.

Jaeger POV cont.:

Jaeger sighed. He’d spent the last month traveling back to the past investigating Pandaemonium with Themis, hunting down rogue blasphemies leftover from the Final Days, and even running errands at the Studium. But things were quiet now, and he had more time to think than he wanted. His focus returned to the moon once again. He stretched his arm forward slowly, as if he could reach out and touch it, and wondered if Alisaie could see it from where she was that moment. He wondered what she was doing…if she thought of him too. If she missed him as much as he missed her. Jaeger pressed his palms into his cheeks and groaned. He was a mess. Perhaps it was time to return to the Rising Stones. Maybe Tataru had news or some quest or another for him to undertake. Anything to distract him from his own traitorous heart and mind.

Alisaie POV:

It had been a month since she’d seen his stupid face. His stupid, oblivious, annoying face that made her stomach burst into butterflies every time she saw it. Or, it *had*. Now the thought of it just made her heart ache. Alisaie leaned her shoulder against a tree, her arms folded, in the frozen heart of Camp Broken Glass. She stared up at the moon, deep in thought. She wanted to blame Jaeger for how she felt. But she only had herself to blame, really. Jaeger was her best friend, and she should have left it at that. But she'd had to be hopeful, just for a moment, that he felt the same way she did. That he loved her too. I mean, it’s not like she had told him or anything….but she had sworn that, in the moments before he had sent her and the others back to the Ragnarok so that he could fight the Endsinger alone in some attempt at noble self-sacrifice (which she was STILL pissed about by the way), he had spoken those three little words. She hadn’t exactly *heard* him over the noise, but she had read his lips. She apparently wasn’t as versed in lip-reading as she thought she was, for when she later asked him what he had said, there was no mention of “I love you.” She hadn’t realized just how much the absence of that admission would break her heart. She had started distancing herself from him after that. She obviously still cared for him and wanted to make sure he wasn’t alone during his recovery, but she couldn’t stay around him for very long. She needed time to get over him, which made her feel even worse, knowing that she couldn’t be the friend that he needed then. Her and Alphinaud’s trip to Garlemald was decided before the conversation that broke her heart, but afterwards she was more determined and sure of their decision than before. Surely…surely crossing the star and helping a nation rebuild would give her the time she needed away from Jaeger to help her heart mend. So why a month later did it still feel just as painful as it did the day she left?

Alisaie POV cont.:

Was it the fact that she had heard nothing from him in the last month? He was probably having fun on some adventure without her, she thought bitterly. It felt ridiculous that she should want space from him, but also be mad that he hadn't contacted her at the same time. She sighed as the moon drifted higher, realizing that it was probably time she get to sleep. Another hard day of work awaited her tomorrow. But she allowed herself a moment for her frustrations to soften. Maybe Jaeger was out there somewhere, also staring at the moon. And maybe, just maybe, he missed her too.
