📉 What happens to interest groups when their political world is upended by a crisis? @michelecrepaz.bsky.social and @wmjunk.bsky.social find disruptions to constituency interests trigger mortality fears among interest groups; loss of political access matters much less. 🔗 doi.org/10.1080/0140...
First page of the article "Staying alive: crisis-induced disruptions and interest group survival" by Michele Crepaz and Wiebke Marie Junk, published online first in West European Politics. Shows the title, author affiliations (Queen's University Belfast and University of Copenhagen), and abstract describing how the Energy-Stability-Area model is applied to interest group experiences during Covid-19.
Figure 3: Survey experiment using OLS to predict mortality anxiety and willingness to invest more resources in lobbying, under three treatment conditions (difficult access, long constituency disturbance, and the interaction of both). Both types of disruption have significant effects on mortality anxiety but not on willingness to invest more resources, with point estimates and 95% confidence intervals shown for each model.
Figure 1: Proposed theoretical framework. A diamond-shaped diagram linking macro-level system instability through two channels — energy disruption (changes in political activities and policymaker relationships) and area disruption (changes in societal and constituency interests) — down to micro-level instability for individual interest groups. Two hypotheses are labelled along the channels: H-E (loss of access increases instability) and H-A (large constituency disturbance reduces instability).

Lobbying coalitions have been central in my work for a long time - but only recently I’ve begun to reconsider one of my assumptions: that you need interest alignment to work together. Esp in European lobbying, I believe that the logic of brokerage is quite central. Very happy about this publication!
