I loved the dandelion fluff in Super Mario 3D Land. You blow at the screen and the seed pods fly away, up and into your view... so unnecessary but a great little immersive detail

But here's one idea: Buy new games you actually want to play. Don't just vacuum up every 95% off game you might actually play but instead just gums up your digital backlog and causes unseen stress.

"It’s genuinely funny. This is what it’s all about. (It is also—down to the Forrest Gump shirt—exactly what Philip Roth went through every year in early October as he sat in his agent Andrew Wylie’s office at the crack of dawn waiting for a call that would never come.)"

Fair Ones: A Double Novel
From the best-selling author of A Children’s Bible, a story of friends, shock, and survival. Lydia Millet’s dialogue-driven, fast-moving double novel Fair Ones follows two Brooklyn women in their forties reeling from the sudden and baffling death of their friend Claire. Fair, Mara’s account, opens in the wake of initial shock as she and Jen try come to grips with the enigma of Claire’s killing. Ones, told from Jen’s point of view, picks up a year later as she and Mara wrestle with new relationships and old secrets. In this vibrant, funny-sad fiction of companionship and solitude, Millet dazzles with dry wit and sharp prose. The narrators’ inner and outer conversations, and their ongoing entanglement with the memory of Claire, explore the ways we create and define ourselves through others. Fair Ones is a love song to the intricate annoyances of families both chosen and unchosen—and to the banality, bombast, and humble beauties of midlife friendships.

Quite obviously different from the FE example, both in genre and audience, but just that idea of people *thinking* they want something (complete freedom) when really a more curated path might make it a better, albeit more limited, experience. Feels like this happens a lot.

This is how I felt with Super Mario Maker, and was disappointed when Nintendo caved to fan pressure and unlocked all the rows of tools right away instead of doling them out on a timed schedule, so you could learn how to use a few first before getting the entire toolbox.

Am I crazy for kind of preferring the more organic (less readable) damage effects, pre-update? There was a subtle sound cue that told you if you were hitting a weak point... I liked that it felt more like a real encounter than a "videogame boss with flashing limbs"

Like the writer, I don't use a prepared script when teaching and instead try to respond organically to what's happening in the room. So I value that approach. BUT: He lost me when he added this near the end. No, AI will not "contribute some of its own [thoughts.]" www.nytimes.com/2026/09/29/o...
