Caves of Qud’s Jason Grinblat on Writing a Game Like a Wolfe Novel
Caves of Qud is not your usual RPG. Last year it won the Hugo Award for Best Game or Interactive Work and the Independent Games Festival's award for Excellence in Narrative. That's an unusual amount of literary credibility to rack up for a video game, let alone a roguelike. Jason Grinblat, who co-created Qud with Brian Bucklew starting in 2007, has a theory for why. It's no accident that Grinblat names Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun as a touchstone. Both master the art of giving out just the right amount of information for the reader.
