Yeah that part is why I'm not ruling out AI in addition to it, because they definitely are odd. I honestly wish phone manufacturers were more open about the exact things their camera apps do

Also: still not ruling out AI in addition. But it definitely does look like heat haze is the root issue here

And this was still during sunrise, so the air above the water had only 10 minutes or so to heat up at this point. The effect usually becomes even stronger during the day when the sun has more energy.

For example, I took this picture last week over the baltic sea at about 13°C. Look at all the distoration at the horizon line! And this definitely doesn't have AI processing. I only did minimal lens correction from the RAW file, otherwise this is basically out of cam directly from the sensor:
A picture of the sun rising above the baltic sea. The sky is tinted orange above the deep blue water. The horizon line is heavily distorted, at some points even showing a secondary horizon line below the actual water level. Below the sun is a vertical distortion, caused by a ship mast that is still behind the horizon but already visible via the mirage.

Winston Yallow @winston-yallow.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
12°C is still plausible for heat haze as it doesn't need high temperatures, just air masses of different density. A dark surface will heat up the air above it, so there is a difference in relative air temperature and density.

Winston Yallow @winston-yallow.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
To me this looks a lot like heat haze / mirage. It's the typical distorted look and it's plausible since it's a zoomed in picture along a dark road in sunlight, so the asphalt is probably heated up enough to cause this effect. I don't want to rule out additional AI artifacts though 😅

From the outside, rendering optimization can look a little bit like black magic. That's why @clayjohn.bsky.social, lead maintainer of the rendering team, is here to show a few examples of some optimizations from this year to highlight that optimizing rendering code isn’t as scary as it sounds.

Another one of the pictures I took recently! This dragonfly really didn't want to sit still for longer than a few seconds at a time, so it took quite a while until I got a good picture. I love how colorful dragonflys are ✨ #photography #nature #dragonfly #naturephotography
Photograph of a green dragonfly hanging on to a small twig of a plant. The background is blurry greenery that could be plants, but it's too blurry to exactly say what it is. The dragonfly itself is in focus and has a metallic green color with some reflective yellow highlights. It's wings are almost entirely transparent, with small black lines forming intricate patterns.

I have personally worked with XGBoost and we had really good results with it. These "simple" models, trained on domain specific data, still outperform LLMs even when those are finetuned (and all that while using less resources). Because LLMs aren't some super powerful entity like some people claim.

Winston Yallow @winston-yallow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
PS: yes, machine learning has amazing abilities in some fields like medicine. Though usually these models aren't LLMs, these are classic machine learning algorithms. They are trained directly on medical data instead of going through the detour of human language.

Winston Yallow @winston-yallow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
The underlying LLM just generates text. But if you feed that into a harness that interprets the LLMs output as, let's say, left/right steering instructions of a car, then that is where it becomes dangerous. The danger is not the "smartness" of the LLM, it's the access given to a stochastic system.
100 0
Winston Yallow @winston-yallow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I mean I agree that we shouldn't develop AI like this, but for entirely different reasons. I don't think that LLMs will be outsmarting people on their own. Instead, I worry what powerful and rich people will use these systems for, and what kind of agent harnesses they will use.
110 0
Winston Yallow @winston-yallow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
We shouldn't call a system that regularly doesn't do what we expect it to do "powerful". It's buggy. And bugs can be dangerous. I personally don't really agree with Geoffrey Hinton since he anthropomorphizes LLMs a bit too much for my taste.
100 0
Winston Yallow @winston-yallow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
So agents working together is just a harness that was programmed to allow this. In the best case, this was intentional. In the worst case, it was a programming bug. LLMs "breaking out" of a sandbox is sometimes portrayed as "powerful", but it just means that the harness is faulty and dangerous.
110 0
Winston Yallow @winston-yallow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
In the end, these systems can only do things that they are given "access" to. Which also isn't direct access, instead there is a small helper program that takes the LLM output and interprets it to call an external tool. The LLM itself isn't powerful. The "agent harness" around it emulates this.
110 0
Winston Yallow @winston-yallow.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
LLMs do not have the ability to make conclusions. It emulates this by being trained on huge datasets to develop weights for tokens in context. It does not think or understand what it is doing, it simply outputs the most probable next token in context. Agents working together is also nothing new.

The moss in the foreground is colored in a vibrant green while the background has muted and darker colors.A photograph of a plant with two blossoms. One blossom (top left) is already wilted, the other one (bottom right) is bright pink and looks like a fluffy ball. There is no part of this paragraph that isn't genuinely scary - important read from the Guardian's @kateconnolly.bsky.social on the Saxony-Anhalt state election. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/s...
The populist, far-right, anti-immigration Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) has surged to a resounding victory in a crucial state election in Germany, but fell just short of winning a majority in its quest to form the country’s first far-right state government since the second world war.

If you ever wanted to know how the world has slowly been forced towards normalizing fascism, we're globally interpreting regional German elections ending a few percent short of a full Nazi supermajority as a good outcome, instead of as a historically proven existential threat.

If you want to customize it, then Fedora is in my opinion better than bazzite. Bazzite shines when you need exactly what they provide, while Fedora is way more easy to customize. There are even variants with tiling managers available out of the box!

Also if you want a tiling window manager (just read one of your other comments) then there is a fedora spin called Miracle. Though I personally just stayed on the default KDE desktop even though I came from a tiling window manager too. The snapping shortcuts + virtual desktops are good enough for me

it feels odd that what's holding technology back from benefiting humanity at this moment, isn't really a technological problem, but a bureaucratic issue of incentive structures there's so much money being wasted on things that are either neutral or a net negative within tech now, it's weird

Last week I needed some time for myself to relax after I had a rather rough and exhausting start into the month. I wanted to get back into #photography for quite some time, and I finally did! I forgot how much I love creating photos, I should definitely do this more often ✨️
A photgraph of an old light-blue industrial crane, covered in graffiti, against a blue sky with no clouds. The most prominent graffiti reads "feminismus" (the german word for "feminism") in all caps. The background has two railway bridges over some water on the left side, and some old industrial buildings on the right side. The whole picture is tilted a bit to the left side.A photograph taken from the bottom of an old industrial crane, looking up towards the blue sky through a cage around the ladder. The ladder itself is leading up to the cranes control room, which is on the right side of the picture. The whole structure is covered in graffiti, and some plywood is attached to the bottom of the ladder to prevent people from actually climbing up.A close-up photograph of plants. The focus is on a bright red fruit cluster in the bottom left third of the picture. It is framed by various green leaves around it, which are blurry in the background and contrast a lot with the fruit cluster.A photograph of an orange blossom, backlit by the setting sun in front of a lake. The blossom itself has a lot of leaves and their fine internal structes becomes visible because of the light shining through it. The reflection of the setting sun on the water surface can be seen directly through a small gap between the blossom leaves, creating a star shaped lens flare around it. The background is blurred, but the soft silhoutee of Hamburgs telecom tower is slightly visible in the reflection on the lake.
