Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 05/10/2026The surreal ”Pink elephants on parade” hallucination/nightmare scene in the original Dumbo film. 5 year old me had nightmares about that one. To be fair though, it IS pretty unnerving :D 050

Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Do both varieties again! - Galapagos were easy, gave harvest despite mistakes along the process. Taste is OK. Nothing special. - Further develop techniques for Black Prince. They just narrowly made it now. With some improvements, we can get a bigger and more secure harvest. They’re delicious! 001
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 23/09/2026The Black Prince variety VERY narrowly made it. We had to pick them half-ripe to save them from the frost, but they did manage to ripen fully off the vine. The harvest was okay-ish per plant. But, they taste amazing! Most intensely sweet and umami tomato I have ever eaten. So, next time … 100
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Well, narrowly, sort of! The Galapagos did make fruit and ripen in time before frost, so they were a success. I made some mistakes with them in the early summer, leading to smaller plants and lesser harvest, but save for the user error, YES, they do work and can be successfully grown outdoors! … 100
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Also, a study of tomatoes! I wanted to see if it’s at all possible to grow tomatoes outdoors (no greenhouse) in our very short season. We tried Black Prince (red-brown ones) and Galapagos (yellow small ones) varieties, both heritage varieties allegedly good for cold climates. Did they succeed? … 130
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 23/09/2026The temperature now goes below zero at night, and only the hardiest plants survive any longer. If our kale hadn’t succumbed to weeds earlier in the summer, it would still be green and fresh. It’s time for the garden to sleep, to wake up next spring. 🍂🛌 110
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Okay, a final harvest of zucchini and pumpkins before the night frost kills them! The angry zucchini plant alone made ~15kg of fruit, and the others a few kg each. Pumpkins… the first generation was eaten by wild animals. This is the second gen, that only had about a month to grow. 140

Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 06/09/2026I’m guessing they have fallen into obscurity because of their unusual taste. If they’re even slightly unripe, they taste awful. They get sweet and nice when ripe, but still quite astringent and will dry your mouth. They’re common in cities as decorative hedgerows or on yards or parks! 010
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 06/09/2026They’re also known as ”aronia”! Apparently they have been cultivated in Scandinavia and Russia for some centuries as a cold-resistant fruit, but nowadays they’re mainly used as a decorative bush, at least over here. Very few people even know the berries are edible and quite healthy! 110
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 06/09/2026An absolute beast in our rather harsh soil and climate: the black chokeberry! The bush has spontaneously grown in our garden, perhaps from a seed dropped by a bird. The yield is huge and easy to pick! The berries have an exotic flavour combo of being both very sweet and astringent at the same time. 120
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Shrooming it up with two very different forest mushroom dishes: Stewed chanterelles with potatoes. Very subtle, creamy and gentle flavours. Peppery milk cap with raw onion on bread. Very intense, punchy and spicy flavours. This mushroom is a particular favourite of mine with its peppery taste! 010

Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026So far I’ve also tried gently boiling it, and pan frying it. Boiling made it flavourless but with a nice firm texture, meh on its own, but a good filler or blank slate for seasoning. Frying it was great, turned out like a hybrid of bok choy and kale. Very tasty! We’ll see what more we invent! 😁 021
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026It thrives despite being completely neglected and having to compete with very aggressive garden weeds, it grows very fast (could prob do 2 harvests in one season), and is easy to harvest. Now to do some product development in the kitchen! Below is an experiment, fermenting it as if it was cabbage. 111
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 22/08/2026Turns out the forage rape (cultivar of brassica napus, ie. turnip and canola/rapeseed) we grew as a cover crop for soil improvement, with no ambitions of any real harvest, is EXTREMELY productive and resilient, moreso than any vegetable I have *ever* grown or seen in veggie gardens! 150
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 20/08/2026Pink potatoes, golden chanterelles and dark green kale. A colourful harvest from our garden!~ 050
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 20/08/2026The best possible apple texture is not just crunchy, but brittle. As in, it’s so crunchy that when you bite into it, a large piece cracks off the apple with a distinct pop. The worst possible apple texture is so soft it’s mealy, almost like biting into a boiled potato with tougher skin 010
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 20/08/2026By this we can conclude that sourness amplifies the texture experience. Crunchy texture = positive points Soft texture = negative points Sourness: increases both positive and negative points from texture Sweetness: reduces both positive and negative points from texture. 🍏🔍📋🐦 110
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 20/08/2026I have a very particular taste in apples, consisting of two scales, flavour (sweet-sour) and texture (crunchy-soft) Crunchy & sour: the best! Favourite type of apple Crunchy & sweet: Also very good Soft & sweet: Mid-tier, not bad, not great Soft & sour: Unpleasant, good only as cooking apples 130

Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 14/08/2026I guess cucumbers are meant to be tough and badass, not smooth like the ones you find in stores! I guess it’s a good thing our harsh and hostile garden makes vegetables grow up into their full, natural potential… xD 000
Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 14/08/2026Even the cucumber vines I thought were too scrawny to give fruit have started making rather angry looking cucumbers. Look at these thorns! Wind-Bird @windthebirb.bsky.social · 14/08/2026The angry zucchini plant we designated as a seed producer is really, really growing and conquering. Look at the size of this fruit! We’re going to have some angry zucchini indeed next year. 250
