Tonight Madison Plan Commission unanimously approved the demolition of the "Wonder Bar" at 222 E Olin Ave. Some public comment even seemed to backfire, with Com. Heck saying that he wasn't convinced by arguments mostly based in nostalgia and worry that the city is changing.

Project owner says it's to be the first completed under Dallas' new 8-unit IRC. My only quibble is that this was already possible under Dallas' adoption of the IEBC (I've done a 2-to-5 unit conversion) but it may be that going through the IRC permitting process is simpler than the IEBC.

States are loosening building codes—single stairways, fewer required breakers—to make small-lot multifamily housing cheaper to build. Pew's 12-year data shows single-stair buildings are just as safe. The payoff: smaller housing types become buildable again. stateline.org/2026/06/22/s...

It's Madison Common Council tonight. Budget season is in full swing. Historically the levy limit was the primary constraint on spending, but our higher levy limit (from ref.) and higher inflation means that we are running up to a state expenditure restraint limit, could mean losing $8M if we go over

ICE told nurses this Minneapolis man “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall.” What actually happened is that they pulled him from a car, beat him so viciously with a steel baton that he had 8 skull fractures, 5 life-threatening brain hemorrhages, and couldn’t remember he had a daughter.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Alberto Castañeda Mondragón says his memory was so jumbled after a beating by immigration officers that he initially could not remember he had a daughter and still struggles to recall treasured moments like the night he taught her to dance.

But the violence he endured last month in Minnesota while being detained is seared into his battered brain.

He remembers Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents pulling him from a friend’s car on Jan. 8 outside a St. Paul shopping center and throwing him to the ground, handcuffing him, then punching him and striking his head with a steel baton. He remembers being dragged into an SUV and taken to a detention facility, where he said he was beaten again.

He also remembers the emergency room and the intense pain from eight skull fractures and five life-threatening brain hemorrhages.

Modern apartments have lower fire death rates than houses. Yet codes require fourplexes to install commercial sprinklers, build dual staircases, and hire architects—while similar-sized single-family houses are exempt. These costs block building smaller apartment buildings.
