Andy Burnham is about to become PM. What does that mean for active travel? New from Moving Up North: the inside account of how Burnham really operates. Ten years of hustings, hot seats, wins and climbdowns, from people who were in the room. A window into how he'll govern next.

So disappointing to see the lack of political will now in Birmingham for safer streets. After questions from Babiker Yahia, whose 4-year-old daughter Mayar was killed by a driver in April 2024, only one candidate (after quite a pause) backed 20mph limits on all residential streets.

One of the recurring responses in the 2019-20 consultation-fest we had in Stockport was for an active travel route alongside the railway viaduct over the Mersey valley. A pipe dream, I thought at the time. Meanwhile, in France... www.francebleu.fr/infos/transp...

A story that sums up how British farming has been governed since WW2 - millions in subsidies paid to ruin our rivers with intensive poultry farming, whilst reintroducing a natural species is made so difficult that people are forced to do it illegally and in secret. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

At Nantwich outdoor pool. There's something about swimming under an open sky that feels great for wellbeing.

A big step in the right direction but @heidialexander.bsky.social could use better language. The word "subsidy" is apologist. We don't talk about taxpayers "subsidising" bin collections - they're a public service. Talk about the future you want for bus & train, not the mess left by privatisation

This one's so frustrating. Not because of the closure, but because the council dismissed any proposals to properly improve this space for walking and cycling. Compare the @walkridestocky.bsky.social proposals, developed with a professional highways engineer, with the council's chosen design.
Walk Ride Stockport's proposed treatment for the Greek Street roundabout. There's a single lane for each direction of traffic, with zebras for each arm. A Dutch-style cycling element has been added to allow cyclists to safely traverse the roundabout. A bidirectional cycle lane goes north to tie into existing infrastructure.Stockport Council's chosen design for the Greek Street roundabout. Zebra crossings have been added to the north and north-east arms. However, the very wide south-east arm has been formalised to give two lanes to the approach to the roundabout. There is a similar layout for the northern arm, making this particularly dangerous for pedestrians. There is no new cycling infrastructure at the roundabout.

Call me a pedant but this unit conversion in a BBC News article is ridiculous
Quote from a BBC article: "Serge Atlaoui, 61, was accused of being a "chemist" by Indonesian authorities and arrested in 2005 at a factory in Jakarta, where dozens of kilos (pounds) of drugs were found."

It’s that time of year again Dynamo lights are just about the best value upgrade in existence for everyday bikes - and they don’t need to be cripplingly expensive I have a cheap Shimano Nexus hub and B&M front and rear lights. Bright enough for unlit canal paths
