Been a while since I’ve been along the Mersey river path to Stockport, so I was glad to see a few of the A frame barriers have been replaced with something much more accessible.

Not one transport question at last week's GM Mayor's hustings. Nothing on the Bee Network, clean air, walking or cycling - despite transport being one of the biggest parts of the job. This is your chance to change that 🧵

View from the saddle of my cargo bike, with a large wooden box at the front with child benches and other bits and bobs. I'm riding across a grassy field that doesn't have a path to my street, even though it does have a path from a cycleway to the other street that backs onto the field. It's a long story.

Such a joy to see inaccessible barriers being removed from walking/wheeling/cycling routes in Stockport. This cut-through is a key part of our commute/school run. Thanks @stockportcouncil.bsky.social and the brilliant campaigners of @walkridestocky.bsky.social 🎉
Before: Screenshot from Google Street View showing a set of three guardrails forming a tight chicane across a path between two houses. Our cargo trike would just about fit, but only with a dismount and lots of manoeuvring. I.e. not remotely accessible, and a pinch point during the school run as young people tend to congregate waiting for their friends. Now: photo of the same cut-through with the chicane removed and just one railing panel remaining at the edge of the road.

Screenshot from "What's your city's excuse" website comparing various physical and environmental metrics in Stockport and Amsterdam. Basically both places have great conditions for cycling, but Stockport has a cycling mode share of 1% compared with 27% in Amsterdam.
