Keep in mind first Democratic Presidential Primary is in South Carolina - @repjamesclyburn.bsky.social’s coming out for SCOTUS expansion is a clear and unmistakable signal for any Democrat fancying a run for President in 2028.

if you're looking for the cause of declining good union manufacturing jobs over the last 50 years, domestic competition from right-to-work sunbelt states is a much bigger deal than foreign competition from free trade.

I think one reason the public has such a shallow understanding of the extent of the damage Trump is doing is that *US political & media elites* have such a shallow understanding. Douthat's pleasant upper-middle-class life hasn't been unduly disturbed, so really, what's the big deal?

Elysium is literally a movie about rich people trying to murder a dude because he could usher an end to a way of life predicated on unimaginable degrees of violence. It is also a movie about the willingness of "genteel" oppressors to deploy the worst kind of people to accomplish their ends.

reviewing the section of The Originalism Trap about the Voting Rights Act and...i'm mad all over again (this is somewhat facetious insofar as I never stopped being mad to begin with) www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/735353...
paragraph from The Originalism Trap, highlighted from "There was" onwards, reading as follows

The United States is sometimes described as one of the world’s
oldest democracies. But political power was not shared in a way
that you could describe with a straight face as “rule by the people”
until 1965 at the earliest, when Congress passed the Voting Rights
Act. The act sought to enforce the Fifteenth Amendment’s prohibition on the denial or abridgment of the right to vote based on race,
color, or previous condition of servitude, and created a pathway to
real political participation for Americans whose votes had been
blocked by law and physical violence. Congress reauthorized the
act several times, in recognition of its utility and the continuing
need for federal enforcement of the Constitution’s provisions—first
in 1970 for five years, again in 1975 for seven more years, again in
1982 for twenty-five more years, and again in 2006 for another
twenty-five more years. There was, for a time, bipartisan consensus:
when the act was last reauthorized in 2006, for example, it sailed
through the Senate with ninety-eight votes in favor and not a single
vote in opposition. The 2006 reauthorization was also the first
time a federal voting rights law passed with the participation of
Black congressmembers representing each of the former Confederate states. And it was the last reauthorization before the United
States had a Black president.

Daily bunny no.2790 is an amateur balloonist
A bunny descends from the sky, in a basket attached to several colorful helium balloons. Falling on a rustic, mountainous landscape, a second bunny (a local to the area) greets them, holding their arms out.

Daily bunny no.2792 is being too generous
A bunny standing in a vegetable patch passes a carrot over the fence to a young fawn, who munches it happily. In the background at the edge of a forest, two more deer observe the vegetable patch from a distance. A second gardener bunny, older, notices the goings-on and frowns, fearing future incursions by the deer.

It’s genuinely shocking if you’re remotely familiar with the basic facts of trans care and youth medicine. It is *profoundly* difficult to access gender-affirming care as a minor and the Times has printed more than a dozen articles implying that it is too easy.

something i'm always on is leadership/seniority's grip on their power even extends to keeping out people in the party who agree with them on everything. even for those who have the exact same "more cops, bomb iran" beliefs, leadership goes "you get this when we're dead and not a minute before"

In defense of democracy, decisive speed is of the essence. And the lack of that, more than anything, is what has landed America in its current mess. There is no curse too strong for the Democratic leadership who, after January 6th, dithered and delayed and sent everyone home to let tempers cool.

On Dec. 4, the Supreme Court will hear U.S. v Skrmetti, a case set to impact access to gender-affirming care. I’ll be in D.C. with the ACLU, @genderlib.com, and so many other fierce advocates and defenders of trans youth for a rally. Will you be there?
A digital flyer for a rally supporting transgender youth. The headline at the top reads, “RALLY FOR TRANS YOUTH!” in bold black letters. Below it says, “Support our rights to our healthcare and our bodies in front of the Supreme Court.” The main image shows a group of people holding colorful signs at a protest. Signs include “TRANS YOUTH ARE THE FUTURE” and “A world without trans people never existed.” One protester is wearing a trans pride flag as a cape. At the bottom of the poster, the details are listed: “Wednesday, Dec 4, 10AM,” with the “Gender Liberation Movement” logo and the website “GENDERLIB.COM.” The background colors are bright, transitioning between turquoise and neon green.

This may be a mean way to say this, but when cis people argue that trans people are "new to oppression" or "recently marginalized," it reads to me as an admission: that because they only became aware of us about 15-20 years ago, it must mean our status as an oppressed community began then.

Abortion freedom allows women and other people capable of birth to take more control of their lives in a world that treats them as sexual resources. Transition medicine serves the same function for transsexual women and other trans people. They're both about us asserting our humanity.
