One small kind of inside baseball thing that I want to also say about Tested is that I own it. CBC licensed it from me, and NPR licensed it from them. The show is mine (as, I think, it should be). And I can only say that because my lawyer Quinn Heraty is amazing and helped me make that happen!!

I love & support this, but makes me realise my rates are "whatever an editor or contractor tells me they have in their budget after vague chat about Artist Union England or CIEP rates which never really apply to what I'm doing." Also working for int'l publications means constant no idea.

Because transparency is good: @certifiedforgot.bsky.social pays $75 per 1,000 words of original horror criticism, but we only have room in our budget for ~2 new pieces a month. Our hope is that, as our subscriber base grows, we can alternate adding new pieces with bumping our rates going forward.

I made it 20 years before everything fell apart, but even then the hours were brutal, the pay didn't make up for it, even though the money I made was incredible comparatively. And now everything is an affiliate link so the algo and commerce editors are in charge. Dismal. Subscribe to Aftermath.
