There has been a lot of chatter today about Zelenskyy's meeting with Trump, some regarding this moment when White House correspondent Brian Glenn asked if the Ukrainian president plans to wear a suit. I want to address idea in this thread. 🧵

Multiple companies are discontinuing their blu ray and 4K players. In addition to the obvious, devastating implications for film preservation, it illustrates once again that the ultra-rich will not be happy until everything in our lives is subscription-based. A landlord for every need.

The $82.5 million sale of "Hot Ones" studio First We Feast is part of a broader strategy at BuzzFeed to shift away from human editors, writers and content producers in favor of artificial intelligence, which result in "high-margin, tech-enabled revenue lines."

I'm always excited when Criterion dips into 1970s Hollywood, and was especially happy to get to write the essay for their release of Arthur Penn's 1975 neonoir Night Moves. Coming in March!

Why is Tokyo so fashionable? Some theories. 🧵
Saagar Enjeti tweets: "Probably a cold take but IMO Tokyo is the male fashion capital of the world: whether it’s western wear, suits, street wear the aesthetic is refined to the highest possible level

From the salaryman to the rebel teen they are impeccably dressed

It also helps no one is fat"

Being disabled isn’t about pity—it’s about being seen. Yesterday, my life-saving devices malfunctioned. Most days, I push heavy equipment solo. No thanks, no check-in. Disability isn’t weakness—it’s resilience in the face of being overlooked. Notice the work. Ask how we’re doing. It matters.

Great piece on Arsenal's post-Edu era—thanks for the analysis, @billycarpy.bsky.social I’m in favor of this move but wonder about his ability to scale up to a club of Arsenal’s size and ambition. Excited to see how this unfolds. #COYG open.substack.com/pub/billycar...

When chief inspector of borders visited Manston in 2022, conditions were so alarming it left him “speechless”. People were crammed on dirty floors, toilets overflowed with faeces, medical care was inadequate and people were referred to by a number on a wristband. www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2024...

The Stax story is incredible. Of course there's the bangers, but more for what it represents. A white brother and sister built a record label in segregated 1960s Memphis, and it became a monument to racial harmony. Right now, its message feels urgent. youtu.be/FAjCOWHUGM8?...

Why do jazz films always feel off? Hollywood’s conventional storytelling doesn’t seem to sync with the spirit of jazz—its chaos, improvisation, and unspoken dialogue. Too often, we get dim lights and smoky clubs, but not the sweat, tension, and raw spontaneity that make jazz alive.

Simplicity in film is the hardest thing to master. This from Aime Leon Dore feels effortless, but that’s the flex. Restraint is power, and this video nails it. What’s the most beautifully simple film you’ve seen? vimeo.com/1017904888
